Luca, Cancer Survivor & Anthony Edwards’ Lucky Charm, Beats Illness!

A full-circle sports moment is capturing hearts across the NBA community.

Seven-year-old Minnesota Timberwolves fan Luca Wright — the same young supporter who gifted Anthony Edwards an orange bracelet during his leukemia battle in 2025 — is now officially cancer-free. The announcement, shared by Luca’s mother on Feb. 26, quickly went viral, drawing more than 34,000 likes and thousands of reposts within hours as fans, players and media outlets celebrated the milestone.

The emotional story began in early 2025.

During a February NBA All-Star reunion event, Luca — then 6 and undergoing treatment for leukemia — met his favorite player, Anthony Edwards. Wearing Edwards’ No. 5 jersey, Luca proudly told the All-Star guard that five was his favorite number. He then handed Edwards a simple orange bracelet, inscribed with a message symbolizing love, strength and perseverance during his cancer fight.

What happened next turned a brief fan interaction into something far bigger.

Edwards, visibly moved, immediately slipped the bracelet onto his left wrist and made a promise on the spot: he would wear it for the rest of his career in Luca’s honor.

He has kept that promise ever since.

From late in the 2024–25 season through the entirety of the 2025–26 campaign, Edwards has worn the bracelet in every game — home and away — as well as during practices and public appearances. Fans began spotting the orange band during broadcasts, and the moment quickly circulated across social media, with major sports accounts and outlets amplifying the story. What started as a heartfelt exchange became one of the NBA’s most uplifting viral narratives.

When news of Luca’s remission broke this week, the Minnesota Timberwolves shared celebratory posts across their official platforms, helping propel the update across Instagram and X. Emotional reactions flooded comment sections, with many calling it “the best news of the season” and praising Edwards for honoring his word for more than a year.

The story resonates beyond its feel-good headline.

Research supports the powerful role sports can play in pediatric resilience. A 2022 review published in the Journal of Pediatric Psychology found that sports-based interventions — including athlete visits, team affiliations and symbolic gestures — can significantly improve morale, emotional strength and treatment adherence among children facing serious illnesses. The review noted that identifying with professional athletes often provides young patients with a sense of hope and motivation during prolonged medical treatment.

Similar athlete-fan bonds have made headlines in recent years. In 2015, NFL defensive tackle Devon Still dedicated his season to his daughter Leah during her cancer battle, helping raise millions for pediatric cancer research. NBA superstar LeBron James has also formed lasting relationships with young fans battling illness, frequently inviting them to games and spotlighting their stories on national platforms.

But Luca’s story stands out for its quiet consistency.

For more than 100 games, Edwards has kept the orange bracelet on his left wrist — a visible reminder that the game can mean more than wins and losses. For Luca and his family, seeing it during broadcasts became a source of strength during hospital stays and treatment cycles.

Now, the bracelet symbolizes something new: triumph.

As Luca begins life after cancer at just 7 years old, his journey — and Edwards’ unwavering promise — serves as a reminder that sports can transcend the scoreboard, forging connections that carry real emotional impact far beyond the court.
