France captain Kylian Mbappé has issued a blistering rebuke of Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla, labeling her a “despicable woman” after she unleashed a series of racist and insulting remarks targeting him following Paraguay’s Round of 16 elimination by France at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The incident stems from France’s 1-0 victory over Paraguay on Saturday, with Mbappé scoring the decisive penalty kick to send the defending champions into the quarterfinals, where they will face Morocco. Rather than focusing on her team’s competitive performance, Senator Amarilla took to social media with personal attacks on Mbappé that were widely condemned as racist and xenophobic.
In her posts on X and Instagram, Amarilla mocked Mbappé’s Cameroonian heritage — his father is from Cameroon, while he was born and raised in France — referring to him as a “colonised Cameroonian” pretending to be French. She further derided his intelligence, calling him a “brute” who “never even learned how to write,” made crude references to his appearance and upbringing (including remarks about “sucking on coconuts”), and suggested Paraguay’s goalkeeper should have disrespected or even slapped him after the match.
The comments quickly drew widespread condemnation. The French Football Federation (FFF) described them as “utterly abhorrent,” “racist,” and “criminal,” announcing plans to file legal complaints. FIFA President Gianni Infantino and other football figures voiced support for Mbappé, while Paraguay’s government distanced itself from the senator, stating that her remarks contradict the nation’s values.
On Monday, Mbappé responded directly on X with a strongly worded statement that quickly went viral:
“Madame Celeste Amarilla, You are a despicable woman and unworthy of your position. You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has sweated passion and honor throughout the competition. Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup, making way for an incompetent woman who gives the worst possible image of her country. I will never allow people like her the freedom to spread their hatred and racism across the world.”
Mbappé’s response was notable for balancing sharp criticism of the senator with praise for the Paraguayan players, highlighting their “passion and honor” and expressing regret that Amarilla’s actions had overshadowed their achievements.
Amarilla, a member of Paraguay’s Liberal Radical Authentic Party, has not publicly responded to Mbappé’s statement as of Tuesday.
As France prepares for its quarterfinal matchup against Morocco, Mbappé’s firm stance has been praised by fans and commentators for defending both his dignity and the integrity of the sport. The 2026 World Cup continues to showcase high-stakes drama both on and off the pitch.
