Kentucky Mother Pleads Guilty in Toddler’s Tragic Death

A horrific crime has rocked Kentucky, where a mother allegedly subjected her 17-month-old daughter to unimaginable abuse, sparking widespread outrage. Erica Lawson, 21, faced justice for the death of her daughter, Elena Hembree, who died on July 30, 2023, from severe injuries. While early rumors claimed Lawson sold Elena to six men for money, court records have debunked these allegations, revealing a tragic case of physical abuse involving Lawson and one other suspect. Elena was admitted to Middlesboro ARH Hospital on July 28, 2023, with critical injuries.

Doctors airlifted her to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, where she tragically stopped breathing two days later. An autopsy revealed the cause of death as non-accidental blunt force trauma to the back of her head, sustained 48 to 72 hours before her hospital admission. Initial allegations of sexual assault, including claims of multiple DNA types found in Elena’s body, were disproven by forensic tests, which found no evidence of such abuse. Lawson was arrested shortly after Elena’s death and initially charged with second-degree manslaughter, first-degree criminal abuse, and other felonies.

In August 2023, prosecutors escalated the charges to first-degree murder, seeking the death penalty. However, in February 2025, a judge ruled that the case did not meet the criteria for intentional murder, reducing the charge to “wanton” murder. On May 17, 2025, Lawson pleaded guilty to aggravated murder, failure to report child abuse, and first-degree wanton endangerment.

She was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with a minimum of 17 years before parole eligibility, and agreed to cooperate against a second suspect. That suspect, 44-year-old Harvey Gollahan, was indicted in May 2025 for murder and three counts of first-degree criminal abuse. Court documents state that Elena was violently shaken at least three times in Gollahan’s home, with him present and directly involved. As of August 2025, Gollahan remains in jail, with prosecutors exploring a possible plea deal.

His next pretrial conference is set for November 2025. The claim that Lawson sold Elena to six men, widely circulated on social media, was dismissed by her defense team as false and damaging. These rumors complicated the case, fueling public anger and calls for justice. Elena’s death also inspired community action, with advocates pushing for “Elena’s Law” to strengthen penalties for child abuse in Kentucky.

Elena’s family, including her uncle, had tried to report suspected abuse weeks before her death, but police were unable to locate her at the time. Lawson is now serving her sentence in a Kentucky prison, while Gollahan awaits further legal proceedings in this Kentucky toddler death case.
