Jay-Z, aka Shawn Carter, has sued an unidentified woman, Jane Doe, and her attorney, Tony Buzbee, for defamation. The lawsuit follows the woman’s withdrawal of a rape allegation against him last month, with Jay-Z alleging that she has since admitted she lied about the accusations. The lawsuit, filed in a federal Alabama court, charges her with malicious prosecution, abuse of process, civil conspiracy, and defamation, in the latest installment of a celebrity legal saga.
The scandal began in October 2024, when Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs, a music mogul, were accused of raping Jane Doe at a 2000 MTV Video Music Awards after-party when she was 13. The accusations were part of a set of suits against Combs, most of which alleged grave misconduct. In February 2025, however, Doe and her attorneys abandoned the accusations against Jay-Z without comment publicly.
According to Jay-Z’s court petition, Doe later confessed to his representatives that the allegations were false. The suit also accuses her attorney, Tony Buzbee, of coercing her into making the allegations for financial gain. Jay-Z argues that the allegations led to significant harm to his business and reputation, including at least $20 million in lost deals.
Jay-Z’s lawsuit alleges the accusations were made to inflict maximum reputational and financial damage. His attorneys contend that the accusations were “so far-fetched” they never would have been made. They allege that Buzbee knowingly pursued a baseless case, pressuring Doe to go ahead with the fabricated accusations. Buzbee has, however, dismissed Jay-Z’s lawsuit as lacking merit in law. He maintains Doe has not retracted her accusations and accuses Jay-Z’s attorneys of fabricating quotes for her.
“After speaking with Jane Doe today, it appears the quotes in the lawsuit attributed to her are completely made up, or they spoke with someone who isn’t Jane Doe,” Buzbee said in a statement. “This is just another attempt to intimidate and bully this poor woman that we will deal with in due course.”
The suit raises some serious questions about false accusations, defamation in the entertainment industry, and legal matters of public figures. False accusations, particularly of sexual misconduct, have serious consequences, not only on the accused but also on genuine victims of such crimes. Legal experts opine that Jay-Z’s suit can potentially set an example for how celebrities fight false accusations in the internet era.
Also brought out in the case is the potential risk for attorneys who pursue questionable cases. If the allegations leveled by Jay-Z against Buzbee are true, it would have professional consequences for the celebrity attorney, who is well known for bringing high-profile lawsuits against powerful people.
