ISIS Terror Plot Targeting Taylor Swift Concerts Foiled: Two Arrested in Austria

Austrian officials announced Tuesday the arrest of two men planning an ISIS-inspired attack at Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna. According to officials, three scheduled shows of the pop star have been canceled.

One of the suspects, 19, is an Austrian national who was arrested in Ternitz to the south of Vienna. This man was known to have pledged allegiance to ISIS and was arrested with chemicals in his possession that could be used at one time as components for explosives. Another suspect was arrested in Vienna. The two suspects had reportedly been radicalized online, and an investigation showed their detailed plans for the attack.

As a result of these planned attacks, the Taylor Swift concerts scheduled for August 8-10 at the Ernst Happel Stadium were cancelled. Initially, authorities had resolved to carry on with the shows because stringent security measures against an expected attack were in place. Nevertheless, and after much consideration for all parties involved, it was resolved that the best option would be to scrap the events. All ticket holders will be automatically refunded.

This again brings to the front the bigger picture of heightened security threats against high-profile events. These arrests bring to the fore the continued threats and the need for vigil by security agencies in aborting such activities against terrorism. Over the last few years, public event security has emerged as a challenge, and this is the latest such plot to infuse a sense of awareness about the perpetual vigil that is required.

What is important, however, is the fact that all these suspects have been successfully arrested and the eventuality of a catastrophe averted. This goes on to underline intelligence and prompt action as the bedrock for ensuring public safety. Going forward, security at public events will most likely be looked at more closely in order to enhance measures against such threats.
