Atlanta rapper Glokk40spaz recently found himself in hot water when he posted condescending remarks about college football phenomTravis Hunter. The new rap artist boasted that despite both of them having gone to high school together, he and Hunter never even shared a single conversation with each other, stating that Hunter played sports and therefore, in his estimation, was “lame.”
Glokk40spaz, an emerging Atlanta artist, rose to prominence in the music community with his street-themed rap and new sound, but controversy surrounding Travis Hunter took over in the spotlight recently.
Hunter, born in 18th May 2003 in West Palm Beach, Florida, moved to Georgia in early teens and represented Suwanee’s Collins Hill High School. There, he was a sensation at both receiver and cornerback in football. High school life for him was nothing short of record-setting—leading Gwinnett County in interceptions, holding school and state records for yards received and receptions, and guiding his school to a 15–0 record and its first state championship.
Despite sharing a school, Glokk40spaz and Hunter never actually met, with the rapper explicitly stating that he wasn’t interested in sports, nor in those who participated in them.
In a clip that recently went viral, Glokk40spaz stated, “I wasn’t playing no sports. I was playing with shit like this,” suggesting that he was dealing with deeper, darker things in life, not participating in sports. Fans and social media followers condemned the rapper, stating that his comments were unnecessary and in poor form. Most agreed that Hunter’s success in soccer overrode that of the rapper at the current moment and that taunting a fellow individual’s success reflects poorly about Glokk40spaz himself. Others condemned the hypocrisy in an individual who aims for success in a career in music speaking down about a fellow’s pursuit of success in a career in sports.

The controversy rekindled debate regarding the divide between music and sports in pop culture. Despite both professions taking an enormous amount of dedication and talent, both have disparate social connotations—especially in high school environments in which students who play sports and students who make music don’t necessarily have a harmonious relationship.
Glokk40spaz’s remarks represent a broader conversation about success and its definitions in many arenas. In a society in which statements become viral via social media, such a statement can make a narrative and inform one’s view of many career choices.
