Convicted Killer of Lesandro ‘Junior’ Guzman-Feliz Found Dead in New York Jail Cell

A chilling twist has emerged in a case that broke hearts across the Bronx. Jonaiki Martinez-Estrella, the man convicted of delivering the fatal blow to 15-year-old Lesandro ‘Junior’ Guzman-Feliz, was found dead in his cell at Coxsackie Correctional Facility on June 29, 2025. At 1:15 PM EDT, prison staff discovered him unresponsive. They tried everything—CPR, Narcan, even an AED—but nothing could bring him back. The Greene County medical examiner is now digging into what caused his death, leaving many to wonder what happened behind those prison walls.

Martinez-Estrella, 31, was a member of the Trinitarios gang and had been accused in the violent 2018 death of Guzman-Feliz. On June 20, 2018, near the corner of Bathgate Avenue and East 183rd Street, Junior, the would-be NYPDofficer and member of the Explorers, was mistaken for a member of another gang.

In the horrifying attack caught on video, gang members, including Martinez-Estrella, chased him into the bodega, yanked him out, and attacked him with knives and machetes. The video shook the nation, and Junior’s murder served as the clarion call to stop gang violence.

The legal repercussions were severe. Martinez-Estrella had been convicted in 2019 of first-degree murder and received a sentence of life without parole. But in March 2023, the Court of Appeals in New York overturned the conviction for legal reasons. He had been reassessed by May 2023 and resentenced to 25 years to life for second-degree murder, in addition to charges for conspiracy and gang assault, to run concurrently. 13 of the 14 suspects detained were convicted.

Some, like Manuel Rivera and Elvin Garcia, also got life, while others, sentenced in January 2023, received 12 to 18 years for manslaughter. The case left a lasting mark on the Bronx, with murals and vigils honoring Junior’s memory.

Martinez-Estrella’s death has sparked fresh questions about safety in America’s prisons. Inmate deaths are climbing, with over 4,100 reported in state and federal facilities in 2018 alone. Most are the product of illness, but suicides, homicides, and overdoses are increasing. Suicides between 2001 and 2018 increased from 39 to nearly 400, homicides from 12 to 83. Overcrowding and sporadic psychiatric treatment are usually fingered, which tells the conditions in jail in gloomy terms.

For the Bronx community, Junior’s murder still stings. His mother, Leandra Feliz, has spoken of finding peace through faith, even as she grapples with loss. Murals across the borough keep Junior’s spirit alive, a reminder of a life cut short. Now, Martinez-Estrella’s death adds another layer of complexity to a story already steeped in pain.

As investigators work to uncover what happened, the public is left wondering: Is this justice, tragedy, or something else entirely?
