A more than 25,000-pound experimental aircraft lifted off a runway in upstate New York using battery power alone. Heart Aerospace says the electricity for that first 27-minute mission cost about $5.
The X1 prototype conducted its maiden test flight with pilot onboard on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 at the Plattsburgh International Airport. The flight was announced by the company on the next day. The plane taxiied, took off, gained height, flew some maneuvers, and finally landed. The X1 aircraft attained a height of about 1,100 feet above the ground level.
Heart describes the X1 as the largest battery-electric aircraft ever flown. It has a 106-foot wingspan, measures 76 feet long and stands about 24 feet high. Four wing-mounted electric motors delivered more than one megawatt of power. One pilot flew. No passengers were aboard. The aircraft is fully battery-electric.
The $5 figure refers only to the electricity used on this short test flight. It does not cover the pilot, maintenance, airport fees, insurance, battery wear or replacement, financing or other operating costs. Heart provided the approximate cost, and independent reports repeated it with that limited scope.

The X1 is a full-scale technology demonstrator, not a passenger airliner. It tests electric propulsion, batteries, aerodynamics, structures, flight controls, systems integration and manufacturing methods at a size closer to a regional airliner. Data from the program supports development of the planned ES-30.
The ES-30 is a 30-seat hybrid-electric regional aircraft. Heart targets roughly 125 miles of all-electric range and up to about 500 miles in hybrid mode. The company aims for pre-production flight testing around 2028 and commercial service around 2031. It projects operating-cost reductions of more than 40 percent compared with some legacy regional aircraft. These remain company targets, not guarantees. Heart, founded in Sweden and now based in the Los Angeles area, has reported customer commitments involving United Airlines, Air Canada and JSX.
Social media focused on the “$5 flight” and the largest-electric-aircraft claim. The strongest supported description is the largest battery-electric aircraft ever flown, according to Heart and consistent reporting. A successful experimental flight does not mean commercial electric airliners are ready for service.
Battery energy density remains a core challenge. Batteries are heavy and store far less energy per unit of weight than conventional aviation fuel. That is one reason the future ES-30 is planned as hybrid-electric rather than a pure battery aircraft. Certification, safety standards, charging infrastructure and supply chains add further hurdles.
There is a definite technical breakthrough for electric power in X1 flight. It will take a long journey from experimentation to routine flights in the future.
