House Republicans have introduced legislation to mint commemorative silver dollar coins honoring conservative activist Charlie Kirk, following his assassination on September 10, 2025, at Utah Valley University.
The measure, led by Republican Study Committee Chairman August Pfluger (R-Texas) and Representative Abe Hamadeh (R-Arizona), directs the U.S. Treasury to produce 400,000 silver dollar coins bearing Kirk’s likeness. If enacted, the coin would mark Kirk—who died at age 31—as the youngest American ever memorialized on U.S. currency.
The proposed coins would feature Kirk’s portrait on one side and the Biblical phrase “well done, good and faithful servant” on the reverse. Additional inscriptions include his full name, “Charles James Kirk,” the year 2026, and traditional U.S. currency phrases such as “Liberty,” “In God We Trust,” and “E Pluribus Unum.”
The Treasury Secretary would finalize the design in consultation with former President Donald Trump.
“This is a fitting honor that cements his extraordinary legacy alongside presidents and founding fathers who shaped our republic, Pfluger said. Charlie Kirk was a conservative titan whose transformational impact on millions of Americans deserves permanent recognition alongside our nation’s greatest leaders and influential figures.”
Since 1892, Congress has authorized commemorative coins to celebrate historic figures and events. Notable examples include coins featuring Sacagawea, former Chief Justice John Marshall, and women’s rights leader Susan B. Anthony. While Alexander Hamilton and Benjamin Franklin appear on standard U.S. banknotes, the new proposal marks an unusual move to honor a contemporary political activist.
Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed while hosting a “Prove Me Wrong” debate event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. Authorities say a gunman fired a single round from the roof of the Losee Center, striking Kirk in the neck from 142 yards away.
The suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah, surrendered on September 12 after his parents recognized him from FBI surveillance images. He has been charged with aggravated murder and other felonies. Prosecutors confirmed they will seek the death penalty.
The coin legislation is part of a broader Republican push to honor Kirk’s memory. Additional proposals include:
- A bipartisan resolution condemning political violence and recognizing Kirk’s contributions.
- Congressional Gold and Silver medal initiatives.
- Establishing October 14, Kirk’s birthday, as “National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk.”
- A request for a statue at the U.S. Capitol.
- A Presidential Medal of Freedom was awarded posthumously by Donald Trump.
Hamadeh called Kirk an “American treasure” who “tirelessly sacrificed his time, energy, and money to save this nation for future generations.”
The bill follows established commemorative coin procedures. Living individuals cannot appear on U.S. currency by law, but posthumous recognition is permitted. Past coin programs have raised over $500 million in surcharges to support museums, historic sites, and monuments.
Supporters of the bill argue that Kirk’s influence within conservative politics warrants permanent recognition. Pfluger described him as “a conservative titan whose transformational impact on millions of Americans deserves permanent recognition alongside our nation’s greatest leaders.”
If passed, the Charlie Kirk silver dollar would become one of the most politically charged commemorative coins in U.S. history, signaling the Republican Party’s determination to enshrine his legacy in the wake of his killing.
