A dramatic scene unfolded at Hersheypark on Saturday evening when a young boy, who had wandered away from his parents, was rescued from elevated monorail tracks by a quick-thinking bystander. The heart-stopping incident, captured on video and now circulating widely on social media, ended safely thanks to the bravery of a park guest.
The ordeal began around 5:05 p.m. on August 30, when the child was reported missing inside the park. According to Hershey Entertainment & Resorts, the boy somehow managed to enter the secured area of the Capital BlueCross Monorail, which was not in operation at the time. The attraction’s entrance was closed with a chain and barricaded turnstile, yet the child still found his way onto the empty platform.
For nearly 20 minutes, witnesses watched in alarm as the boy paced back and forth on the narrow track, elevated about 20 feet above the ground. Onlookers shouted instructions, hoping to coax him back toward safety, but the child moved uncertainly along the rails.
The situation took a decisive turn when a bystander—seen in the video wearing a green hat—climbed onto a nearby rooftop. In a daring move, he leapt onto the monorail track, cautiously approached the boy, and lifted him to safety. Cheers erupted from the crowd as the child was carried off the tracks unharmed. The rescue was completed by 5:28 p.m., roughly 23 minutes after the child was first spotted.
Hersheypark officials confirmed that staff responded immediately once the boy was seen in the restricted area.
“We are grateful for the vigilance of our guests and the swift response of our team, and we remain committed to maintaining the highest levels of guest safety throughout Hersheypark,” the company said in a statement.
The incident has prompted fresh questions about park security and how the child bypassed multiple safety barriers. It also follows another safety concern at the park just weeks earlier. In July, a 9-year-old girl drowned in Hersheypark’s wave pool, though authorities later ruled the death accidental and cleared the park of negligence.
While no injuries were reported in Saturday’s scare, the viral rescue video has fueled debate online about theme park safety protocols and the importance of close supervision in crowded entertainment venues.
As one relieved witness posted on social media: “It could have ended so differently. That man was a hero.”
