Casio’s $620 Luxury Calculator: Limited Edition Release in USA

Casio just turned a desk staple into a $620 collector’s item and Americans can’t stop talking about it. The Japanese electronics maker announced the S100X Urushi Edition on March 18, 2026, with only 650 units worldwide and a U.S. release planned through select importers starting April 9. This isn’t your dad’s basic calculator. It’s a hand-finished statement piece built on Casio’s flagship S100X platform.

The magic happens with urushi lacquer, a centuries-old Japanese technique using natural sap from the urushi tree. Artisans at Yamakyu Shikko apply it by hand in multiple thin layers, drying and polishing for weeks until it shines like a mirror. Each calculator gets subtle variations because the sap is a living material no two are exactly alike. The finish ages gracefully, developing a richer patina over time.

“This became a truly special project, one that embodies both the skill and pride of a craftsman,”

Said artisan Ryuji Umeda.

“My philosophy is to respect the material and give it everything I have, aiming to create something beautiful that will loved for years.”

The unit ships in a premium box with gold foil branding and keeps the standard S100X guts: 12-digit display, tax and currency conversion, angled screen, aluminum body, and solar-plus-battery power. Casio calls it “The Special One” a fusion of tradition and tech.

U.S. reaction hit X hard the moment the Dexertopost dropped. People are cracking up over the price tag next to free smartphone calculators.

“$620 for something my iPhone does in 2 seconds?”

One viral reply read. Others are genuinely intrigued collectors and stationery nerds praise the Japanese heritage, comparing it to luxury pens or designer keyboards. The mix of disbelief and curiosity has turned a calculator launch into water-cooler conversation across American offices and Reddit threads.

In Japan, urushi work on everyday objects has deep cultural roots. Americans are used to cheap, disposable tech, so a $620 calculator feels outrageous at first glance. Yet this release sits right in the growing lane of luxury everyday items think designer mechanical keyboards, high-end fountain pens, or limited-edition watches. Casio isn’t trying to replace your phone app; it’s selling pride of ownership.

With only 650 pieces hitting the market, the S100X Urushi Edition is already a conversation starter. Whether you see it as genius or overkill, it proves one thing even the simplest gadgets can become art when Japanese craftsmanship gets involved. Check Casio’s official channels after April 9 if you want in on the limited U.S. drop.
