Britney Spears was arrested late Wednesday (March 4) in California on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to law-enforcement records.
The pop star was stopped in Ventura County and handcuffed by officers from the California Highway Patrol at approximately 9:30 p.m., authorities said. Spears was later transported to a county facility, where booking records show she was processed around 3 a.m. Thursday (March 5).
According to the records, Spears was released later Thursday morning under a cite-and-release procedure. She is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on May 4.
Following the traffic stop, Spears was reportedly taken to a hospital for a blood test to determine intoxication levels. Officials have not publicly released the results of the test or additional details about the stop.
A representative for Spears described the incident as “completely inexcusable,” adding that the singer plans to cooperate fully with authorities and seek help.
The incident arrives amid continued public scrutiny of Spears’ personal life in the years following the end of her conservatorship in 2021, which came after the fan-driven #FreeBritney campaign. Since regaining control over her personal and financial affairs, Spears has remained a frequent subject of media attention related to her social media activity and business ventures, including deals involving her music catalog.
Authorities have not confirmed whether additional details about the case will be released ahead of Spears’ scheduled court appearance in May.
