At the 2026 Boston Marathon, one of the most talked-about moments didn’t come from a record-breaking split or a photo finish at the front of the pack—it came from pure willpower.
Runner Lan Nguyen has gone viral after completing the final stretch of the 26.2-mile race by crawling and scooting to the finish line, after her legs gave out with just over a mile left to go.
Footage from the course shows Nguyen, dressed in neon racing gear, sitting on the pavement near mile 25, visibly in distress but refusing to quit. “I have to finish,” she says in the clip before attempting to move forward despite being unable to stand.
From there, the race turned into something far more raw than competitive. After reportedly suffering a severe cramp or injury that left her unable to bear weight on one leg, Nguyen began dragging herself forward—inch by inch—toward Boylston Street. Medics and fellow runners briefly tried to assist her, including competitor Rosenberg, who paused his own run while on pace for a personal best.
She declined to stop.
Instead, Nguyen pushed forward on her own, alternating between scooting and crawling as the crowd lining the final stretch erupted in cheers. Step by step, she covered the remaining 1.2 miles until she finally crossed the finish line—completing the full marathon distance.
The moment quickly spread across social media, with many praising her determination, grit, and refusal to give up despite obvious pain. Others, however, questioned whether continuing under those conditions raised safety concerns, even with medical personnel on-site.
Still, for many watching, the image that lingered wasn’t about risk—it was about resilience.
Nguyen’s finish came during a marathon already packed with emotional highlights, including multiple acts of sportsmanship where runners helped exhausted competitors reach the line, and standout performances at the elite level. But it was her final mile that ultimately stole the spotlight, turning a race moment into a viral symbol of endurance and human will.
