Agents with the McAllen office made the find during a routine inspection tied to a larger Homeland Security Task Force probe. The contraband was concealed between the cabbage leaves — a clever bit of produce camouflage that has become a favorite tactic among drug traffickers trying to slip massive loads past U.S. border checkpoints.

Cabbage makes ideal smuggling material — it’s bulky, perishable, widely available in supply chains, and easy to pack drugs into the leaf layers without drawing extra attention during inspections. This is just the latest example of cartels getting creative with everyday goods like celery, squash, berries, and now cabbage to move huge quantities of methamphetamine into the United States.
