Stewart puts an end to his 17-year tenure

0

We’ve known for a while that Logan would be Hugh Jackman’s last outing in the X-Men franchise as Wolverine. Now it’s been confirmed another major actor is done: Patrick Stewart, who has played Professor X since the first film 17 years ago.

The actor made the announcement today during a SiriusXM Town Hall event alongside Jackman and Logan director James Mangold, according to Entertainment Weekly. During the event, Stewart talked about how the three had watched the film together last week in Berlin, and were moved to tears.

Stewart puts an end to his 17-year tenure (2)

The movie ended… and we were going to be taken up on stage, but not until the credits were over. So, we had some time to sit there and, as I sat there I realized there will never be a better, a more perfect, a more sensitive, emotional, and beautiful way of saying au revoir to Charles Xavier than this movie. So, I told [Hugh] that same evening, ‘I’m done too. It’s all over.’”

Like Jackman, Stewart has been a constant fixture in the franchise since 2000’s X-Men, as well as X-Men 2, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, The Wolverine and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Unlike Jackman’s Wolverine, the character was recast for 2011’s period piece X-Men First Class and X-Men: Apocalypse, in which James McAvoy played the part.

KFC Looks To Bring A Healthier Alternative

0

KFC may be famous for its calorie-filled Double Down creation, but that may change.

The fast-food giant has announced a new burger made out of cauliflower and kale.

It features a “chia-seeded cauliflower bun”, “unsweetened almond yogurt”, “ice cube relish”, “spiralised chicken breast” and “100 percent British kale”.

But things are not all as they seem, as it’s suspected the burger is part of an elaborate publicity stunt aimed at trolling “clean-eating” fanatics.

The new dish has been created in collaboration with Figgy Poppleton-Rice – a so-called “#CleanEating fanatic and cauliflower connoisseur” – whose Instagram account first appeared only a week ago.

Her account is filled with quotes like, “Cauliflower isn’t a food. It’s a lifestyle choice.”

It’s believed the marketing ploy was created to emphasize how good the Colonel’s fried chicken tastes in comparison to the clean-eating alternative, and it appears to have taken people in.

“What in the name of all that is holy is this? A clean burger…you mean a tie dye ..hug a tree… hippy burger….and who in the name of sweet muscular Jesus is figgy poppycock when she’s not backpacking in the Andes?” one confused commenter wrote on Facebook.

However, KFC is refusing to clarify whether the burger will actually be available to customers.

“The KFC spokesperson isn’t available to comment as they are currently looking into an increased cauliflower demand,” a press officer for KFC told Mashable in an email.

Is Yeezy Season 5 Uninspired?

0

In terms of streetwear culture, the unveiling of Kanye West’s YEEZY is by far the most anticipated collection in fashion. With his untouchable legacy as a style icon, Mr. West is undoubtedly a fashion trailblazer through his strong influence on urban apparel. Although reception from previous YEEZY collections was generally mixed, each selection seemed to offer something new.

YEEZY Season 5, on the other hand, feels different. Modeled after an Americana theme through a modern norm-core lens, this collection continues the baggy, disheveled look that we have grown to expect from YEEZY, from the nostalgia-evoking trucker jackets to the washed denim and camouflaged everything. Nonetheless, very few pieces truly stick out as fashionable.

Instead, Kanye seems to be offering staple items that we can either purchase at our local thrift store or probably already have in your closet. It’s safe to say that the homeless “chic” look is overdone and is in desperate need of retirement. Honestly, if the YEEZY brand was not attached, would this collection garner half (let alone, any) of its praise?

There are, of course, some standouts. The Adidas Calabasas line which consists of sleek athletic jackets and sweatpants as well as the YEEZY Runners seemed to be crowd favorites. Another show stopper on the runway was the long high-end fur coat sported by the Hijabi-wearing model Halima Aden as she effortlessly exuded luxury and elegance.

Although a relative disappointment, the Season 5 will not be a deal breaker in YEEZY’s streetwear appeal. However, Kanye may need to offer something a bit more fresh and original in the next collection before things get too stale.

Check out the full collection here.

2017 Trades Shattering Franchise Hopes

0

The 2017 draft trade outcome has been one of the worst trade sequences by far. With numerous players being a part of mind boggling trades, the league left fans bewildered. For example, the most shocking trade came with, star player, Demarcus “Boogie” Cousins of the Sacramento Kings being sent to the New Orleans Pelicans in exchange for Tyreke Evans, Buddy Hield, and Langston Galloway, a top three protected 2017 fist round pick and a 2017 second round pick.

Additionally, another key trade included Lou Williams being sent to the Houston Rockets in exchange for a 2017 first round pick and Corey Brewer, who does not seem to bring the same game that is being left by Lou Williams.

Lastly, another key trade included the Philadelphia 76ers getting rid of Nerlens Noels for the Dallas Mavericks’ former, Andrew Bought, a player the organization seemingly planned to build the franchise around alongside Joel Embid. In lieu of that, the 76ers also got Justin Anderson and the top 18 protected first-round pick.

Lauryn Hill Is A Grandmother

0

Lauryn Hill is officially a grandmother. Her and Rohan Marley’s 19 year old son Zion recently welcomed the newest addition to the family on Sunday: a baby boy named Zephaniah.

Rohan – the son of late reggae legend Bob Marley – took to Twitter to make the announcement, sharing pictures of both him and Zion holding by baby Zephaniah.

Zion Marley (who is an artist himself) is most notable for being the subject of his mother’s song “To Zion” from her classic album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in which she expresses the sacrifices she made for her son’s birth. Nonetheless, Zion now has a son of his own.

Condoms and Qurans used to move drugs

0

Among the methods described in their photo essay are swallowing condoms full of contraband — a time-honored drug-smuggling tactic that can kill the carrier if a condom bursts in their stomach — and the remarkable practice of stuffing copies of the Quran with pills.

“Recently the most common substance found has been Captagon tablets, which acts as a mental and physical stimulant. ISIS have previously been reported for having taken Captagon tablets to help keep them awake during the gun battles,” al-Arabiya observes. In fact, Captagon has been described as the drug of choice for 40 percent of Saudi Arabia’s young drug users.

Saudi police say smugglers have also been hiding their wares inside fruit, vegetables, auto parts, table lamps, and sheep intestines.

Drug smugglers often receive the death penalty in Saudi Arabia, usually through beheading with a sword, a practice that dismays human-rights activists. Damaging a copy of the Quran can also bring the death penalty for apostasy.

There have been a number of large drug busts in the Kingdom recently, one of them involving two Syrian nationals who were attempting to move 257,000 pills by hiding them in coffee grinding equipment.

High-Profile cases to stream live

High-Profile cases to stream live

Mediaite founder Dan Abrams plans to launch an online network dedicated to live courtroom coverage, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It will reportedly be called the Law Newz Network, as an extension of Abrams’ Law Newz blog.

Trial coverage will stream from 9AM to 5PM, with footage repeating overnight, at least to start. THR points out that Abrams worked at Court TV in the ‘90s, where he covered, among other things, the OJ Simpson trial. That trial, which was broadcast live to news networks, was widely watched by the American public, but some critics say the cameras in the courtroom had an effect on how the trial played out.

Still, the launch of the Law Newz Network seems like an obvious attempt to capitalize on a resurgent interest in true crime stories. FX’sThe People v. OJ Simpson and ESPN’s 7.5-hour OJ Simpson documentary were both popular and critically acclaimed. Then there’s Serial, HBO’s The Jinx, and Netflix’s Making a Murderer.

The first two trials to stream live will be those of former football player Aaron Hernandez, who has been indicted for a double-murder, and MMA fighter War Machine, who will face trial for sexual assault and attempted murder beginning on February 27th. In an email to The Verge, Abrams confirmed that after these two trials, coverage needs to be authorized on a case-by-case basis. Law Newz Network plans to file motions to permit cameras in the courtroom as trials arise.

The White House Just Promised a New Crackdown on Weed

0

At his daily White House press conference, Sean Spicer painted a clearer picture of how the Trump administration views recreational marijuana by likening it to the opioid crisis, Politico reports.

After explaining that the president “understands the pain and suffering” that medical marijuana eases in some people with terminal illnesses, the White House press secretary went on to say, “Recreational marijuana, that’s a very, very different subject.”

“When you see something like the opioid-addiction crisis blossoming in so many states around this country, the last thing we should be doing is encouraging people,” Spicer said. He added, “I do believe that you’ll see greater enforcement of it.”

Spicer was right in some regard, as the opioid crisis is “blossoming.” Roughly 30,000 Americans died of an opioid overdose in 2014, but prescription-painkiller abuse is rarely associated with recreational weed use. In some cases, weed has even been used to help opioid addicts get clean.

Back when Obama was in office, the government generally didn’t step in to discourage states from legalizing recreational marijuana, which has already passed in Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. Spicer’s statement seems to suggest that Trump’s new attorney general, Jeff Sessions, might try to make it difficult for more states to try to legalize recreational use in the future. Sessions, who has been notably against expanding recreational marijuana laws, was vague about the issue during his Senate confirmation hearings.

Marijuana advocates, like Tom Angell of Marijuana Majority, find the move hypocritical.

“If the administration is looking for ways to become less popular, cracking down on voter-approved marijuana laws would be a great way to do it,” Angell told VICE. “On the campaign trail, President Trump clearly and repeatedly pledged that he would leave decisions on cannabis policy to the states. With a clear and growing majority of the country now supporting legalization, reneging on his promises would be a political disaster and huge distraction from the rest of the president’s agenda.”

André 3000 Partners With Tretorn

0

2016 was busy as hell for André 3000. He appeared on some of last year’s most impressive projects, including Frank Ocean’s Blonde, Kanye West’s The Life of Pablo, Travis Scott’s Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight, and Solange’s Seat At The Table. It appears 3 Stacks has finally stepped out the studio for a minute, but only to add another job title.

According to WWD, Tretorn – Swedish footwear and outwear company known best for their classic Nylite tennis shoes – has recently welcomed André 3000 as the creative director to help their brand reach a broader millennial audience.

The 126-year-old company is currently undergoing a revamp to their brand shortly after being sold by Puma to Authentic Brands Group (ABG) last year. ABG’s president and chief marketing officer, Nick Woodhouse, was in search of someone who was influential.

“It was very serendipitous,” Woodhouse said. “We wanted to work with André because he resonates with all ages and he’s an OG. He’s not a flavor of the month. There are a lot of terrific, young influencers out there, but Andre is established. These young kids are reaching out to him to collaborate. That’s why we did this.”

André 3000 was already a big fan of the tennis sneaker, so it was a perfect fit. The 41-year-old is set to appear in Tretorn’s fall global brand campaign and design a collection of footwear for 2018. He will work directly with Marc Fisher, Tretorn footwear license owner, to upgrade its traditional styles. The rapper did not waste any time sharing his vision for the company.

“He came to the meeting with sketches of shoes,” Nick Woodhouse stated. “He has a very clear point of view on style, the way he dresses and the way he carries himself.”

Looks like André and Tretorn are going to make a great team.

Podcast Personality Taxstone Indicted On Gun Charges

0

Taxstone – host of popular podcast ‘Tax Season’ – has been indicted on gun charges in connection with deadly shooting at T.I. concert in Manhattan last May.

According to documents obtained by Bossip, a federal jury found enough evidence to indict Taxstone – real name Daryl Campbell – on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and receiving a gun through interstate commerce.

In 2008, Taxstone plead guilty to attempted robbery, which would have prevented him from having a gun. Federal prosecutors said despite that being true, he still illegally possessed a 9-milimeter Kel-Tec semiautomatic handgun. This is the same gun that was allegedly used in the T.I. concert shooting, which left one man dead and several wounded. Surveillance video shows Taxstone entering the room where the shooting went down and abruptly leaving right after. In addition, his DNA was found all over the gun.

Taxstone has been held without bail in federal custody since the beginning of 2017.

He is not the only public figure connected to the incident. Troy Ave was also accused of shooting up the backstage of the concert and is currently battling attempted murder charges, which he claims to be self-defense.

After Taxstone was arrested, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office lifted Troy Ave’s bail restrictions, which now allows him to travel for performances and visit his family in New Jersey. Troy Ave’s team declined to comment on Taxstone’s indictment.

It is not looking good for the podcast star. If found guilty, Taxstone faces a maximum of ten years behind bars for each of the two charges.

Remy Ma Rips Apart The Private Prison System

0

Remy Ma is passionate about more other than music. In a recent interview with The Fader, she opens up about her own experience behind bars, and her thoughts on the current state of the private prison system.

Back in 2008, The Bronx rapper was convicted for shooting a woman in the abdomen over $3000. As a result, Remy Ma was sentenced to eight years in the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for Women. She has been out on parole for about three years now, but her time in prison damaging to her well-being.

“I’m almost positive I have some type of PTSD,” Remy Ma stated. “Almost a decade of my life was consumed by the prison system. Of the past 15 years [as a rapper], I’ve spent most of that time in prison as opposed to the ‘free world,’ so I don’t think I’m going to forget any of the things I went through, and I still have people that I have learned to care about that are there, and will probably end up having to spend the rest of their life there.”

Remy provided details of what she witnessed during her time in prison. She was fortunate because she had a strong support system, which many of the women incarcerated with her did not have. “The backbones of these families are women because a lot of the men are either gone or in prison for that matter, so seeing these women thrown away like trash just bothered me.”

Remy Ma also shared her views on the very flawed private prison system, specifically the sentencing method. She points out some public figures like rapper Bobby Shmurda and G29 affiliate Santino Boderick who were sentenced to 117 years in prison. In Boderick’s case, he was offered a 15-year plea deal, but rejected it. Due to his decision, he was given an even harsher sentence.

“The point that sticks out to me is if you offer me 15 years, regardless of what happened at that trial do we end up at 117? How? That’s life,” Remy questioned.

America has the most people incarcerated out of every country in the entire world and Remy believes prison reform needs to take place. She even has a few ideas on where to begin.

Her first solution: “The first thing has to be the de-privatization. We have to end the private prison system,” she demanded. Secondly, she believes we should change the rules and regulations that limit convicted felons. For instance, taking away their voting rights.

“These are the people that are making the laws… And when you look at the majority of people in prisons, they’re minorities. So who is this really stopping from voting? Who is this really keeping out of certain jobs.”
