Giana Dettloff’s first year of college had barely begun when a Halloween night out with a close friend turned deadly. The 19-year-old freshman and cheerleader at North Central College in Naperville was visiting Bloomington when gunfire tore through a backyard party around 1:21 a.m. on November 1, 2026.
A simple event that was attended by about 150 to 200 persons became a tragic occurrence. There were reports of at least 10 gunshots fired and the police arrived in the shared backyard of 109 E. Division Street in a minute from the place where he/she was attending to another call. The event was reported to be joyful with no previous disturbances.
Dettloff, a Carol Stream resident and recent Glenbard North High School graduate, was pronounced dead at the scene. McLean County Coroner Kathleen Yoder said the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and pelvic region. Eight other people, ages 16 to 22, were wounded. Victims included students from Illinois Wesleyan University, Illinois State University, Quincy University, and local high schools. Most have been reported stable.
Bloomington Police Chief Jamal Simington spent more than an hour with Dettloff’s parents the morning after the shooting.
“She was their only daughter,”
He said.
“She was described as full of life, a sweet girl with a very bright future, and an athlete who was visiting one of her best friends at our local university.”
Friends, coaches, and teammates remembered her as kind, energetic, hardworking, and someone who mentored younger cheerleaders. North Central College confirmed her place on the cheer team and offered support to the campus community.
The shooting happened in a residential area of rental properties near Illinois Wesleyan University’s baseball field not at Dettloff’s own college. Bloomington Police are leading the investigation with help from state and federal agencies. Witnesses described possible suspects as Black males, but authorities have not confirmed identities or whether one or more shooters were involved. No motive has been established, and no arrests had been announced in reporting through November 5.
Calls for cellphone videos, surveillance cameras, dashcam footage, and eyewitness tips from anybody in the area were made by investigators. The main priority, according to the investigators, is to solve the murder case and not anything else connected to it.
There is a mystery surrounding who pulled the trigger and the reason behind their actions. As police keep looking for answers among the attendees and evidence collected, communities mourning the loss of Giana Dettloff from her high school, college, cheer family, and hometown reflect on the vibrant life and loving nature she brought with her.
