Bonnie Tyler, the singer from Wales whose raspy-voiced power drove ’80s anthems, passed away at the age of 75 years. The death was announced on July 9, 2026. It shocked many people. People have started to express their tributes on social media platforms by sharing the lyrics of her songs and stories of concerts attended.
As stated by her family and the management of the hospital, Bonnie died in the late hours of July 8 in a hospital located in Faro, Portugal. She had been suffering from complications due to a gut infection following the operation. The statement released by the family and the management reads:
“Bonnie’s family and team are devastated to announce the unexpected passing of Bonnie yesterday evening while hospitalized in Portugal because of the illness which she was being treated. We will release a further statement soon but would request for privacy in the wake of this tragic loss.”
Bonnie’s health problems began in the first weeks of May. On May 6, she had emergency surgery for a perforated gut in Portugal. Following the surgery, she went into a medically-induced coma. During one attempt to awaken her, she went into cardiac arrest but was revived by the physicians. For some brief moments, she was able to get out of the coma at mid-June, but she continued to be critically ill in the intensive care unit. Everything seemed to have improved gradually but eventually, things worsened. This happened just one month after celebrating her 75th birthday on June 8.
The singer was born Bonnie Hopkins on June 8, 1951, in Skewen, Neath, Wales. She became a member of the British music scene, where she rose to prominence, eventually gaining international stardom. It is worth noting that her unique powerful and husky voice resulted from the throat surgery she had undergone in the 70s, which could have made her voice impaired permanently. In 1977, her song, ‘It’s a Heartache’, together with her song, ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’, featured in the 1983 album ‘Faster Than the Speed of Night’, which she worked with Jim Steinman, propelled her into international stardom. Her melodic piece of work, ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ has been declared the greatest power ballad ever with streams exceeding one billion. The songs, coupled with her power and uniqueness of voice, have made her a star. Some of her other hits like ‘Holding Out for a Hero’, featured in the film ‘Footloose’ and the song “Lost in France” have contributed greatly in making her a pop rock star.
She has continued to record and tour up till now. She competed in the Eurovision Song Contest representing the UK in 2013. Moreover, she has published a number of albums in the 2020s, including The Best Is Yet to Come, in 2021. Also, in 2022, she received an MBE award (Member of the Order of the British Empire) for her contributions in the field of music. She is married to Robert Sullivan since 1973. She has lived mostly in Wales, but she has also stayed in Portugal during winters.
At the moment, her colleagues and fans have taken to social media to commemorate the legacy that she has left in the music industry. The songs’ ballads and melodic power seem to be resurfacing on social media with increasing frequency. Every time there is an eclipse, her song Total Eclipse of the Heart is played, and it continues to gain popularity as it gets featured in films and playlists. She also had the unique ability to combine rock-country music styles with powerful ballads that could touch the hearts of millions in America.
Bonnie Tyler’s voice was one of a kind, and her songs are going to keep playing for a long, long time. Her family has asked for privacy as they grieve, and that’s more than fair. Rest in peace, Bonnie.
