Two American men have been arrested after one climbed into the enclosure of Punch, the internet-famous baby Japanese macaque, at Ichikawa City Zoo in an apparent attempt to promote a Solana-based memecoin.
Reid Jahnai Daysun, 24, and Neal Jabahri Duan, 27, both U.S. nationals, were detained following the incident on Sunday, May 17, 2026. Daysun, a university student, allegedly scaled a low fence into the “Monkey Mountain” habitat, while Duan — who described himself to police as a singer — filmed the stunt from outside.
According to reports and video footage circulating online, Daysun entered the restricted area wearing a bright blue smiley-face emoji costume tied to a memecoin project. The intrusion startled the troop of Japanese macaques, causing the animals to scatter. Zoo staff intervened quickly, and no physical harm came to Punch or any other animals.

Punch, a 9-month-old macaque who gained global attention earlier this year after being rejected by his mother and forming a touching bond with a stuffed orangutan toy, has become a major draw for the family-oriented zoo. His wholesome videos have amassed millions of views worldwide.
Both men face charges of forcible obstruction of business, a charge frequently used in Japan for public disruptions. They have denied the allegations, with Duan claiming his arrest was unjust since he did not enter the enclosure. The pair remain in custody without bail.
In the wake of the incident, Ichikawa Zoological and Botanical Garden in Chiba Prefecture has introduced new safety measures, including nets, wider buffer zones, limited viewing times, and increased patrols. The changes have drawn complaints from fans disappointed by reduced visibility of Punch and the troop.
Japan is known for its strict enforcement of public order, especially at popular attractions, making the miscalculation particularly costly for the two influencers. Legal proceedings are ongoing, and the men could face fines, further detention, and deportation.
Punch himself is said to be unharmed and continuing his normal activities at the zoo.
