Rick Ross & BigXthaPlug Eye Rudy’s Chicken Rescue Amid Dallas Closure

Dallas’ own BigXthaPlug has sparked a viral conversation that could change the fate of one of the city’s most beloved neighborhood eateries.

Earlier this week, the rising rapper publicly floated the idea of buying Rudy’s Chicken, the Oak Cliff staple that is scheduled to close at the end of the week after serving the community for more than 30 years. Shortly after his post circulated online, Rick Ross jumped into the conversation with an offer to split the purchase — instantly amplifying speculation about a potential celebrity-backed rescue.

While no formal deal has been announced, the mere possibility has brought national attention to a restaurant that has long been a cornerstone of South Dallas culture.

On Monday, cars stretched around the building as customers waited patiently for what could be their final box of Rudy’s signature fried chicken. Some drove in from neighboring suburbs; others said they simply couldn’t imagine letting the restaurant close without one more visit.

For regulars like Betty Nelson, the restaurant carries decades of personal history. She recalls being introduced to Rudy’s years ago by the man who would later become her husband. Her standing order — a three-piece dark meat plate — hasn’t changed since. What keeps her coming back, she says, is the bold seasoning and unmistakable crunch that set Rudy’s apart.

Other customers were prepared for marathon wait times. George Zasire, who said he once waited 90 minutes for an order in the past, found himself standing in line nearly twice that long this week. Meanwhile, first-time visitors such as Sunshine said social media buzz finally convinced them to see what the hype was about — with some joking that they snagged the “last ticket” of the day.

The crowd surge reflects more than food nostalgia. For many in Dallas’ Black community, Rudy’s has functioned as a gathering place — a dependable fixture for post-church meals, family dinners and neighborhood meetups.

Employees say the restaurant’s longtime owner, now in his 80s, has been dealing with health challenges and is preparing to step away. While online rumors have swirled about financial pressures, staff have indicated that ownership details are still unfolding. Despite speculation tied to BigXthaPlug and Rick Ross, workers say they have not yet been formally contacted by either artist.

Still, the idea of new ownership has stirred hope.

“This is a Dallas institution,” Nelson said. “It’s really going to be missed.” Like many loyal patrons, she hopes that if the restaurant is sold, it lands in the right hands.

For BigXthaPlug, whose booming delivery and Texas-rooted storytelling have fueled his rapid rise in hip-hop, the conversation feels personal. The Dallas native has consistently spotlighted his city in his music and public appearances, building a reputation as one of its most vocal ambassadors.

His rise from regional standout to nationally recognized artist has been marked by high-profile collaborations and sold-out performances, all while maintaining strong ties to Oak Cliff. The possibility of purchasing Rudy’s — even floated casually — aligns with that hometown loyalty.

Rick Ross’ involvement only adds intrigue. Beyond his rap catalog, the Maybach Music Group founder has established himself as a savvy businessman, particularly in the food franchise space. His quick public offer to “go half” signals both entrepreneurial interest and a knack for headline-grabbing moments.

Online reaction has been split between celebration and skepticism. Some see the potential partnership as an example of successful Black artists reinvesting in legacy Black-owned businesses. Others question whether celebrity ownership would preserve the original recipes and character that made Rudy’s special.

For now, the restaurant remains open through Saturday, serving up its heavily seasoned chicken and classic sides to packed lines that snake through the parking lot. Whether BigXthaPlug and Rick Ross turn a viral exchange into a business deal remains to be seen.
