JACKSONVILLE, FL — What began as a heated disagreement between two roommates turned deadly last Thursday night, leaving one man dead and a close-knit neighborhood stunned.
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, 34-year-old David Carter was fatally stabbed inside his west side apartment on June 20. His alleged attacker? Marcus Johnson, 28 — a man Carter had reportedly let live with him for months without paying rent.
Police say tensions boiled over when Carter asked Johnson to pay $250 to help cover overdue utility bills. Instead of settling the debt, Johnson allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed Carter multiple times in a shocking act of violence.
First responders arrived at the scene shortly after 7:30 p.m., but it was too late. Carter was pronounced dead at the apartment.
Neighbors say the two men had argued several times recently, usually about money.
“You could hear the yelling through the walls,” said Maria Gonzalez, who lives next door. “David was a good guy. He’d let people stay with him when they were down on their luck. But it felt like Marcus was just taking and taking.”
Police arrested Johnson later that night at a park nearby, where he was reportedly trying to hide. He now faces a second-degree murder charge and is being held without bail at Duval County Jail.
Investigators recovered a blood-covered kitchen knife from the scene, which is being tested for forensic evidence.
“This was a senseless, preventable tragedy,” said Detective Laura Simmons. “A small debt escalated into a fatal confrontation.”
Community members have been left reeling from the loss of Carter, whom many describe as quiet, kind-hearted, and always willing to help others, even when he didn’t have much himself.
A candlelight vigil is planned for June 25 at 6:00 p.m. outside Carter’s apartment complex.
Johnson is scheduled to appear in court on July 10. In the meantime, the case has sparked new conversations about the risks of unclear financial arrangements between roommates and how quickly things can spiral when trust breaks down.
