Two Georgia teenagers reported missing on June 30, 2026, were found deceased the next day in a rural area of Webster County, prompting an active double homicide investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Deputies from the Webster County Sheriff’s Office responded to a missing person report for one of the young men. During the search, they discovered the bodies of both teenagers near the intersection of Twin Towers Road and Johnson Road in a wooded area close to Preston. The case quickly transitioned to the GBI as a double homicide.
The victims were identified as 17-year-old Jo’Quavious Jones of Lumpkin, Georgia, a rising senior at Stewart County High School, and 19-year-old Zekevian James of Richland, Georgia, a recent 2025 graduate of the same school. They were last seen together before the disappearance report.
Their deaths have deeply affected families and the tight-knit southwest Georgia communities. Jones was described in local reporting as a young man with his whole future ahead, while James had a good-paying job and was expecting a child, according to family statements.
The GBI is leading the probe, with assistance from local authorities. Special Agent Joseph Chesnut noted that such cases are uncommon in their rural counties. No suspects, arrests, or motive have been announced. Autopsies are pending to determine the official cause of death.
Zekevian’s mother, Sandra James, spoke out publicly amid her grief:
“You can’t believe rumors because it’s a million of them.”
She urged the community to provide information to investigators rather than spreading unverified claims, noting that the family has received limited details so far.
“The hard part is I still have other children and I have to see about them. With all this, it’s just a lot it makes you feel overwhelmed.”
Local outlets like WTVM, WRBL, and FOX 5 Atlanta have covered family pleas for tips and community concern over youth safety in the region.
Officials have yet to determine the cause and manner of death, along with any potential connection to the scene of the crime and whether or not the victims were specifically targeted. No suspects have been formally charged, nor any evidence officially presented.
The case is ongoing, and any information could be reported to the GBI Regional Investigative office (Americus): 229-931-2439, Webster County Sheriff’s Office: 229-828-7503 or submitted anonymously to 1-800-597-TIPS or via the “See Something, Send Something” app. The case will eventually be presented to the Southwestern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.
This shooting had a big impact on the small community of Southwest Georgia, an area not accustomed to such tragedies. While investigators sift through evidence and await toxicology reports, loved ones and concerned citizens alike call for an end to the horror and hope for a swift resolution. It is advised that the public stay alert for formal press releases from the GBI and local authorities, rather than relying on unofficial and often misleading social media posts. This is far from over.
