A bombshell lawsuit has sent shockwaves through the basketball world, dragging former Los Angeles Lakers star Byron Scott into a sexual assault case from nearly 40 years ago. The 64-year-old NBA icon, a key player in the Lakers’ dazzling “Showtime” era, is accused of assaulting a 15-year-old schoolgirl in 1987. Filed in August 2024, this case has ignited fierce public debate and scrutiny.
The accuser, Hayley Dylan, now 53, says the assault happened at Campbell Hall School in Studio City, Los Angeles, during a Lakers event. According to her lawsuit, the incident unfolded in a locked janitor’s closet, leaving Dylan with deep emotional scars. She claims it “shattered her innocence” and altered her life forever. At 15, Dylan says she had never even kissed a boy before the alleged assault. She’s now chosen to go public with her identity, pursuing justice through a civil lawsuit made possible by California’s Child Victims Act, which lets survivors of childhood abuse file claims years later.
Scott, a three-time NBA champion and 2008 Coach of the Year, doesn’t deny sexual contact with Dylan but insists he thought she was 18. His lawyer, Linda Bauermeister, says Scott is “devastated” by the allegations, which blindsided him 35 years later. The lawsuit charges Scott with sexual battery, assault, false imprisonment, and causing emotional distress. It also points the finger at Campbell Hall School for failing to keep Dylan safe.
Recently, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge John Kralik shot down Scott’s attempt to stay anonymous in the case, stressing that the public deserves to know who’s accused of childhood sexual assault. The judge also made sure Campbell Hall School remains named in the suit, doubling down on transparency. Dylan is seeking over $25,000 in damages, including lost earnings, and wants a jury to hear her case.

A standout in the Lakers’ 1985, 1987, and 1988 championship runs, Scott also coached teams like the Sacramento Kings and led the Lakers as head coach from 2014 to 2016.
