Atlanta Police Department reported that the shooting occurred at 300 block of Edgewood Avenue, just near a busy streetcar stop packed with late partygoers. Killed was 27-year-old Santos J. Wyatt, who tragically died at the location, leaving behind grief-stricken loved ones. Ten others, aged 18 to 29, were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment. An 18-year-old man is critically injured after he had an emergency surgery, and the rest are stable, but no further details were available as to whether they were injured. The ages of those involved, all teens to late 20s, highlight the devastating impact upon a young generation out late seeking entertainment.
Police are searching for four suspects—three men and one woman—who allegedly approached a crowd and opened fire. Investigators found 34 shell casings and multiple firearms at the scene, pointing to a fierce exchange of gunfire. A witness reported seeing a group of armed individuals with backpacks peering into cars along Edgewood late Sunday night, suggesting a possible robbery attempt, though police have not confirmed this theory. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum noted that the shooting likely stemmed from a dispute that spiraled into violence, but the precise motive is still under investigation.
This shooting was part of three shootings that went down within Edgewood that night, but those others—in a fight at a parking lot and a shooting that hurt one person with a hurt ankle—are not believed to be linked. The violence concluded a bloody weekend in Atlanta, with 29 people being shot between 12 incidents, two of them being found to be deadly, according to police data. Atlanta’s 2025 homicide count of 57 is lower than 2024’s count of 76, but this sudden epidemic served to reinvigorate gun violence fears within nightlife venues.
Mayor Andre Dickens addressed the tragedy, calling for community support to solve the case.
“With so many people out there, someone saw something,”
He said, urging witnesses to come forward. His administration and the Nightlife Division are intensifying efforts to curb violence.
“This is about broken families and a community in pain,”
Dickens added, emphasizing the human toll. Many of the victims are believed to have been bystanders caught in the crossfire, amplifying the tragedy’s senselessness.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene. One local recounted,
“Gunshots rang out, one after another, and I just dropped to the ground, running for cover. It’s gut-wrenching to know someone didn’t make it.”
Another, visibly shaken, said,
“A bullet grazed my face. I can’t even feel safe going out anymore.”
These raw, firsthand accounts reflect the fear now casting a shadow over Edgewood’s vibrant strip.
The Atlanta Police Department, in collaboration with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), is reviewing surveillance footage and 911 calls to track down the suspects, who remain at large. Schierbaum pledged,
“We’re working around the clock to find those responsible and hold them accountable.”
