A son of one of the most renowned and recognizable coaches in the NFL is currently serving time for a domestic shooting case which is currently making the Bieniemy name known all over the country. Elijah Zion Bieniemy, 27, has been charged with the shooting of his mother, Mia Bieniemy, 57, at their house in Ashburn, Virginia, at a time when his dad, Eric Bieniemy, the offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs was far away from there attending training camp.
On July 26, 2026, at around 7:32 PM, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Department received a call about an incident of shooting that happened in a house at the 20000 block of Northpark Drive. Upon arrival, they found Mia Bieniemy having gunshot wounds. She made the call to 911 herself. She was admitted in the hospital due to her serious injuries.
Elijah Bieniemy was arrested at the scene and taken to Loudoun County Adult Detention Center and booked at 2:41 a.m. on July 27 after police received a complaint. He is charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling. He is being held without bail, and his preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 31, according to court records. He remains innocent until proven guilty.
Eric Bieniemy was with the Chiefs in St. Joseph, Missouri, when the incident occurred. He has stepped away from training camp to be with his family. The organization issued a statement:
“The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family. Out of respect for their privacy, we won’t have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed the situation after practice.
“Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family,”
Reid said.
“Thoughts and prayers are with them. I can’t get into details on it, but things happen sometimes, and Eric will work through it. He’s got a great support group here, as does his family, as needed, and then we’ll just let time take care of it from there.”
Reid confirmed Mia’s stable condition and added,
“She’s a saint, we all know that the people that know her. One of God’s good blessings sitting right there. Really, a special person. But things happen.”
Investigators have classified the case as domestic and said there is no ongoing threat to the public. No motive has been released, and the investigation continues. Sheriff’s officials noted no prior incidents had been reported at the home.
