Chinese electric vehicle company XPeng just stepped into the future — and turned a lot of heads doing it.
At its 2025 AI Day event in Guangzhou this week, the company revealed its next-generation IRON humanoid robot, a remarkably lifelike female robot that’s already taking social media by storm. Many people watching online couldn’t believe the woman-like figure walking across the stage wasn’t real.
The debut — which felt more like a fashion runway than a tech demo — showcased a robot with fluid, natural movements, complete with a human-like spine, bionic muscles, and soft synthetic skin that’s designed to feel “warm and intimate.” Standing about 5’10” (178 cm) and weighing roughly 155 lbs (70 kg), IRON even features a 3D curved display on its face capable of showing emotions.
Unlike most humanoid robots that are gender-neutral or purely functional, XPeng has leaned into personalization and style. The company says future buyers will be able to choose from different body shapes, hairstyles, and possibly clothing — a design philosophy that CEO He Xiaopeng compared to buying a car.
“Just as people choose the color and trim of a vehicle, robot owners could one day customize body type and sex,” He said at the event. The goal, he explained, is to make robots that feel “warmer and more intimate” in everyday life.
Under the surface, IRON runs on three of XPeng’s own Turing AI chips, packing an impressive 2,250 TOPS of computing power. The system combines several advanced AI models, allowing the robot to see, understand, and act — walking naturally, holding conversations, and even interpreting complex commands.
Each hand alone has 22 degrees of freedom, giving it the dexterity to gently hold small objects — something that wowed audiences during the live demo. In total, IRON boasts 82 degrees of freedom, enabling movements that are strikingly close to those of a real person.
Inside, XPeng has fitted IRON with all-solid-state batteries, a first in the humanoid robot industry. The company claims that the batteries are both safer and more durable, a crucial feature for a robot designed to operate in proximity to people.
While many are dreaming about having IRON as a futuristic home assistant, XPeng says the robot’s first jobs will be in public and commercial spaces. Starting in 2026, the company plans to roll out IRONs as:
- Tour guides in malls and museums
- Receptionists and office greeters
- Sales assistants in XPeng’s own showrooms
XPeng states that it will commence preparations for mass production in April 2026, with full-scale production anticipated by the end of that year.
After clips from the event went viral, Chinese social media exploded with theories that XPeng had used a real woman instead of a robot. To prove skeptics wrong, CEO He Xiaopeng posted an unedited behind-the-scenes video showing the robot’s inner mechanisms — from its cooling fans to the sound of its motors and its intricate hand design.
The video helped quiet the rumors, but it also underscored just how realistic IRON’s design truly is.
The IRON robot marks a significant step in XPeng’s evolution from an automaker to what He calls a “global embodied intelligence company.” The company is opening up its software platform to developers and has even established a data factory in Guangzhou to enhance its robots’ capabilities continually.
XPeng also introduced what it dubbed a “fourth law of robotics” — inspired by Isaac Asimov’s famous three. The new rule:
“Robots cannot disclose any human privacy.”
Whether people find IRON fascinating or unsettling, one thing is clear — XPeng’s creation has blurred the line between machine and human more than ever before.
With her smooth movements, lifelike appearance, and customizable personality, IRON isn’t just a piece of tech — she’s a sign of where human-robot relationships might be headed next.
