Nathaniel Scott Gotham, age 32, is accused of stabbing his wife some 24 times with the motive of stopping her from “talking,” say Arizona police authorities from Mesa. The surviving victim is currently hospitalized after an incident that occurred on July 11, 2026, in a stable condition.
The police were called to respond to the stabbing at 4:30 p.m. at an apartment complex near University Drive and Greenfield Road. They arrived to find the woman with stab wounds. Gotham was apprehended at the crime scene, who was allegedly covered with blood.
According to the prosecution and court documents, Gotham admitted that he committed the assault. He explained to the police that he had “snapped,” stabbed her with an intention of injuring her and wished her to stop talking. According to the allegations, he was frustrated at her because she
“had wasted the best years of his life” and he “married the wrong woman.”
Injuries to the back as well as injuries to her head, neck, and face were inflicted upon the victim. She sustained injuries to her hands too and these injuries are known as defensive wounds. The murder weapon used according to the police is the blood-stained steak knife. The name of the victim has not been disclosed and she has been taken to the hospital.
Gotham and the victim had been in a relationship for over a decade and married for about four years. Prosecutors noted a prior domestic violence incident in which Gotham admitted to choking her several years earlier.
Gotham was booked into Maricopa County Jail on the attempted murder charge, a domestic violence Class 2 felony. A judge set his bond at $500,000. He made an initial court appearance shortly after the incident, with the next hearing scheduled for July 17, 2026. The investigation continues.
This example highlights intimate partner abuse in the United States. According to the Center for Disease Control, one in every three women and one in six men are survivors of intimate partner violence, including physical violence, sexual contact violence, or stalking. On average, 24 people are abused every minute. Previously experienced non-fatal strangulation is acknowledged as a strong predictor of violence escalation.
Arizona is one of the states with the most severe issues with domestic violence with dozens of victims being reported annually.
If you need assistance 24/7, you may call the phone number 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or visit thehotline.org. There is also the Arizona Sexual & Domestic Violence Hotline.
Gotham has produced evidence of his admissions and physical evidence. Nevertheless, it is hard to believe that there was nothing before the alleged snap that led to him. The case will undoubtedly be heard in court in the coming weeks. Therefore, readers should watch the news about Maricopa County officials closely.
