Tory Lanez’s long-awaited appeal, during which the Canadian rapper was convicted to have shot fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion, becomes a critical date on August 18, 2025, where oral arguments are to be made to a hearing panel within California’s Court of Appeal, Los Angeles. It’s his greatest hope yet, though, for Lanez, or his given name Daystar Shemuel Shua Peterson, with a 10-year prison sentence having been issued coming up to two years ago. The verdict might have his convictions overturned, his sentence reduced, or see his original verdict upheld, so a critical moment comes with a high-profile case that has been a world-wide talking point.
The altercation that was in question within the case happened during early morning hours of July 12, 2020, after a party within Kylie Jenner’s mansion from Hollywood Hills. Megan Thee Stallion, who formerly went by Megan Pete, averred that Lanez shot a gun next to her feet as she tried to get away from an SUV after having a heated quarrel. She needed surgery to have bullet fragments taken from her foot and has been open about the physical and emotional trauma.

“Steele” McMillan, mentioned a statement where he claimed that during their appeal, they would be challenging “serious procedural errors and evidentiary matters that undermined the fairness of the initial trial.”
He further mentioned
“improper emotional appeals by the prosecution”
and how forensic evidence was handled.
Prosecutor Alexander Bott refuted those allegations, saying to journalists,
“The jury’s verdict was backed by overwhelming evidence, including medical records and eyewitness evidence. We are satisfied that the conviction will be upheld”
Megan’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, denounced the appeal as a rehashing of previously unsuccessful arguments, citing that a five-year restraining order was issued to Megan against Lanez in January 2025 after she accused continued harassment from prison.
Lanez’s time behind bars has been eventful. In May 2025, he was stabbed 14 times by a fellow inmate at California Correctional Institution, Tehachapi, and ended up with two deflated lungs, being transferred to another facility.
In spite of these hurdles, Lanez has kept releasing songs from behind bars, his March 2025 album being Peterson, although a purported project titled Prison Tapes was abandoned. Celebrities including Iggy Azalea and Chris Brown have expressed their support publicly, but others, including Megan, have advocated for accountability.
The appeal stirred up renewed debate surrounding celebrity responsibility, male/female roles, and internet bullying of survivors. Elected politicians, such as U.S. Representative Anna Paulina Luna and former New Jersey Assemblyman Jamel Holley, urged California Governor Gavin Newsom to consider granting clemency, and petitions supporting Lanez’s release have topped 322,000. Megan, however, has been steadfast:
“Facts are facts. He did it,”
she said in a statement issued in May 2025.
If his appeal is unsuccessful, his lawyers might then turn to the California Supreme Court, a very rare step within the state’s appellate hierarchy. If his convictions are reversed, his case might be sent back to a trial court or his sentence might be shortened possibly with a bearing on his parole-eligibility or even his deportation potential, given his status as a Canadian national.
