When a video clip of Tory Lanez’s uncle surfaced online this week declaring that the Canadian rapper would be “home in 90 days,” it ignited a wave of excitement among fans. The short video, shared by hip-hop outlet No Jumper on X, shows the man identified as Lanez’s uncle speaking outside a courthouse, brimming with confidence.
“My spirits is like super up, super up. I believe he’ll be home ASAP,”
the uncle, known as Speedy, said.
“Within the next 90 days, they’re going to free Tory. I ain’t gonna even lie. I feel lit. Blessings on blessings, y’all.”
The promise, however, stands in sharp contrast to the legal reality recorded in California’s court system and prison database.
Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, had gained popularity with such tunes as Say It and Luv and had become a regular fixture of North American R&B and hip-hop. But all of that came crashing down in December 2022 when a Los Angeles jury found him guilty of three felony counts of shooting fellow rapper Megan Thee Stallion in July 2020.
The charges were alleged firearm assault with a semiautomatic firearm, possession of a loaded firearm not registered in the vehicle, and negligent use of a firearm. As per the jury, the shooting by Lanez followed a fight following a party at Kylie Jenner’shome. She stated the shooting had left her needing surgery on bullet fragments.
In August 2023, Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Under California law, his earliest chance for parole would not arrive until 2029.
On August 19, 2025, No Jumper posted the now-viral clip of Speedy, who confidently told a reporter Lanez would be released in just three months. The post immediately spread across social media, with fans rallying under hashtags suggesting a homecoming tour. Others expressed skepticism, pointing out the mismatch between a decade-long sentence and a sudden “90-day” release.
The optimism echoes previous public comments from Lanez’s father, Sonstar Peterson, who in July 2025 claimed
“movements happening in the background”
could lead to an early release though he offered no specifics.
Lanez’s legal team continues to push appeals, arguing that trial errors, including contested DNA evidence, compromised the verdict. Two habeas corpus petitions were denied earlier this year, with appellate judges dismissing claims about missing firearm evidence and bullet fragments.
The rapper’s profile also grew inside prison after a violent incident in May 2025, when he was stabbed multiple times by another inmate. He survived, later calling the attack “a test of faith.”
The case has remained polarizing. Megan Thee Stallion has held strong, accusing Lanez of shooting her and labelling repeated claims of defence as “desperate”. Celebrity friends such as Drake and Ye have signed petitions calling on Lanez’s release, further sparking arguments on social media about justice and star power within the justice system.

To the average fan, legal procedures can be confusing. But under California rules, Lanez’s 10-year state sentence means he cannot simply walk free without a significant legal change. Appeals can take months or years. Parole is not automatic. And extraordinary measures like a pardon or commutation are rare.
For now, the next milestone is the outcome of Lanez’s current appeal, argued before the court on August 18, 2025. A ruling could come in the coming months, but experts stress that overturning a conviction is no small feat.
