A Detroit teenager who told her family she found a newborn baby on their porch on Thanksgiving has revealed that the infant was actually her own child — a secret she says she kept out of fear.
Sixteen-year-old Peyton Peoples gave birth alone inside her family’s west side Detroit home on Thanksgiving Day, she told FOX 2 Detroit. The baby boy, later named Paxton, was initially reported to police as an abandoned infant after Peyton told her relatives she discovered him outside in the cold. The family called 911, and the story quickly spread on social media.
But at the hospital, where Detroit police had brought Peyton to determine whether she could be the baby’s mother, she admitted the truth.
“I’m happy now. I was just scared at first,” Peyton said. “I was laying in bed, my water had broke, and I went in the bathroom and I had Paxton… three pushes into the toilet and there he was.”
Alone and unsure what to do, she cleaned the newborn herself and searched TikTok for instructions on how to cut the umbilical cord.
“I looked up on TikTok how to cut my umbilical cord and I cut the cord,” she said.
Still terrified to tell her mother — who is a single parent of four and grieving the recent death of Peyton’s father, who was killed in a robbery earlier this year — she invented the story about finding the baby outside.
“He was never on the porch,” Peyton said. “Why my porch? Why my porch?”
Her mother, Kyra, believed her. The two are close, and Kyra shared the “found baby” story online, where it went viral before the truth came out.
Peyton says she feared adding to her mother’s burden.
“It was already hard for her to raise us… that’s just adding another burden on her back,” she said. “I didn’t want to do that.”
Despite the shock, Kyra says Paxton is a blessing and that the family will adjust. “We’re going to figure it out,” she told FOX 2. “I’m going to keep going to work. She’s going back to school. I’m going to do midnight, she’s going to go to school in the day. We’re going to switch off.”
Detroit Police’s child abuse investigation unit and Child Protective Services are reviewing the case. As of the latest updates, no charges have been announced. Michigan’s Safe Delivery law allows parents to legally and anonymously surrender newborns up to 72 hours old at designated safe locations, but Peyton did not utilize those protections.
Paxton survived the home birth and is being cared for at the hospital alongside his mother.
Kyra says they’re moving forward together. “The baby is always a blessing,” she said.
