Taylor Swift Covers Public Resource Costs for Madison Square Garden Wedding

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce fully reimbursed New York City for all permit and public safety costs associated with their July 3 wedding at Madison Square Garden, Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed on Friday.

Speaking at a press conference, Mamdani directly addressed questions about potential taxpayer expenses for the high-profile event. “Taylor Swift has paid already the cost of the permit that was lodged, which was over $160,000 for that event and for the response to that event,” the mayor said. “And that was a permit that was finalized, I think, in just the days before the event itself.”

The star-studded nuptials required street closures around the famed Manhattan arena, significant crowd and traffic control, and a heavy NYPD presence for security, given the couple’s massive global profiles and fan interest. The reimbursement covered those logistics, including overtime for roughly 70 detectives and 50-plus officers across the Thursday rehearsal and Friday ceremony.

The payment aligns with standard NYC protocols for large private events at venues like MSG, where organizers are required to cover special event permits and associated public resource costs.

Details of the wedding quickly captured headlines: Approximately 1,000 guests filled the transformed arena, which was turned into a garden-like setting for the occasion. Adam Sandler officiated the ceremony, with Swift’s brother Austin serving as “Man of Honor” and Kelce’s brother Jason as Best Man. Swift wore custom Christian Dior Haute Couture designed by Jonathan Anderson, while reports noted performances that included Stevie Nicks. Among the attendees were celebrities such as Selena Gomez, Ed Sheeran, Gigi Hadid, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lopez.

The $160,000 figure specifically accounts for the permit and direct city response costs and does not include the couple’s separate MSG rental fees — reported to be in the millions — or their broader wedding production expenses.

Swift, one of the world’s biggest recording artists, and Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, have been together since 2023. Their relationship has been a frequent topic in both music and sports media, culminating in the highly anticipated July wedding. Mamdani’s comments appear aimed at quelling speculation about public costs during a busy summer in New York that also featured major events including the FIFA World Cup and America 250 celebrations.

No additional taxpayer burden for the wedding has been reported.
