Samsung Employees Could Earn $560K Bonuses for $60K Salaries Here Are the Facts
An engineer at Samsung making around $60,000 could take home nearly $560,000 worth of pre-tax bonuses. This is the shocking number that went viral following Pubity’s post on X, featuring lots of cash and an industrial background. While it’s based on factual information coming from South Korea, there are several contextual details missing from the viral tweet.
Back in May 2026, Samsung Electronics and its biggest union reached an agreement preventing a massive strike. The arrangement includes a performance bonus for the Device Solutions (semiconductor) division: 10.5% of the profit made by the division goes to the uncapped pool. 40% is divided among eligible DS employees, while the other 60% is allocated according to business unit performance, with Memory usually receiving the lion’s share. The bonus is paid mostly in the form of Samsung stock a third is instantly tradable, with the rest lockup period lasting one year and two years until late March/early April 2027.
On top of existing Overall Performance Incentive, the union’s latest estimates show that if the semiconductor division’s 2026 operating profit is about 370 trillion won, employees in memory chips will receive total bonuses of about 80 million won ($60,000) at roughly 750 million won ($560,000) before tax. Employees in the common organization would receive more like 530 million won while those in System LSI and Foundry would receive around 240 million won. Samsung has provided the calculation but cannot confirm any specific figures for the $560,000. It depends on the final profit, performance in each unit and approval.
Around the same time the bonus details surfaced, the office of South Korean lawmaker Choi Soo-jin reviewed public career records and identified at least 27 senior engineers who left Samsung or SK Hynix for China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT). Those engineers averaged 15.4 years of experience; six held principal or executive roles with more than 20 years. Chinese recruiters reportedly dangled 60–100% pay bumps, multi-year guarantees, housing help, and education support. Most of the 27 later left CXMT after short stints.
This artificial intelligence-induced memory boom particularly of high bandwidth memory has increased profits tremendously and made the worldwide competition for process, design, and yield talent extremely fierce. The high bonuses in Korea function as both profit-sharing scheme and retention incentive. The reporting does not include that Samsung designed this program to counter the Chinese offers directly, nor does the publicly available career information indicate illegal technology transfer.
The fact remains Samsung promised an unlimited special bonus linked to the profitability of chips, and some memory-chip workers would receive up to $560,000 of pre-tax incentive according to current projections. The viral version simplifies the situation: it is a union’s estimation, but not a promise from Samsung; it adds up to already existing incentives with the new one; figures vary greatly depending on units; payout will be mainly in restricted stock in 2027 spring; and retention in view of the Chinese recruitment is actual industry reality, rather than the main goal of the deal.
