Hip Hop 50 Live at Yankee Stadium

The year marks a monumental milestone for hip-hop, which celebrated its 50th birthday this summer. While a Chuck D narrated podcast and multiple Hulu shows were among the many ways to commemorate the occasion, one of the more extravagant Hip Hop 50 Live events will occur at New York’s Yankee Stadium on August 11, symbolizing the day the genre was born.

    Goodbye to Run-DMC

In a set dubbed “Bottom of the Ninth,” Run-DMC co-founders Joseph “Rev. Run” Simmons and Darryl McDaniels will perform together, perhaps for the last time. Back in January, the duo dropped hints that they would put the band to bed for good this year by giving their final concert at Madison Square Garden this April. However, that event did not materialize, and this show will mark the next closest thing to a reunion of the iconic group.

    Hip Hop 50 Live Performers

The event will feature several other specialty sets along with the headliner acts. The “Queens of Hip-Hop” section will include performers like Eve, Lil Kim, and Remy Ma, while the “Pillars of Hip-Hop” segment will honor Kool Herc and Cindy Campbell, who famously threw the basement rec-room party where hip-hop was born on August 11, 1973. A “Legendary DJ” set will also be led by DJs like Clark Kent, Marley Marl, and Mannie Fresh, and the Sugar Hill Gang, Grandmaster Caz, Kurtis Blow, Mele Melodi, and Roxanne Shante are slated to make appearances as well.

Several other performers will be announced later, but the concert is already being praised as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for fans. Tickets for the event, produced by Mass Appeal in partnership with Live Nation and the Yankees, are available now on Ticketmaster, with prices starting at $50. A limited number of tickets will be available Thursday (June 8) from 10 a.m. EST through 10 p.m. The general on sale will open Friday (June 9) at 10 a.m. EST.
