The rapper Stormzy and TV presenter Maya Jama have assumed in an emotional Instagram announcement that they have separated on July 17, 2024—just less than a year after they rekindled their romance. Following almost a decade-long relationship, it marked the end with ups and lows in public admiration and private struggles.
Stormzy and Maya Jama met for the first time in October 2014, at the Red Bull Culture Clash Festival, while they were both still relatively unknown. There was obvious chemistry between them, and the following year, they became an official item. That year, Stormzy got his breakthrough with the freestyle “Shut Up,” while Maya had just kicked off her broadcasting career.
By 2017, Stormzy was still so vocal about his feelings towards Maya when he told one source,
“I’m still so young but I want to propose, it’s going to happen and I will do it right. She is so sick, she is the best.”
However, in 2019, the two broke up after about five years of dating.
Fans were absolutely pleased in August 2023 when it was disclosed that after months of trying, Stormzy and Maya had reconciled and given the relationship another go. The couple had tried through the past years to make things work but later decided to depart once again. Speaking to Surprise Chronicles on her last fight, Maya alluded that it took a lot of figuring out, relearning, and unlearning.
Sources close to the couple hint that a huge issue between them was different timelines on the issue of settling down. While Stormzy was excited about starting a family, Maya, who was now in the peak of her career, with engagements at Dolce & Gabbana and Rimmel London, was not quite ready. This gap in priorities, in the end, became simply too big a chasm to bridge.
