Nicolas Cage Stars as Spider-Man in Gritty Prime Video Series

Nicolas Cage is set to don the mask of Spider-Man Noir once again, but this time in a live-action series. The series, aptly titled “Noir,” has been greenlit by MGM+ and Amazon Prime Video, promising a global audience a fresh take on the beloved superhero.

The news broke ahead of Amazon’s upfront presentation to advertisers in New York. “Expanding the Marvel universe with ‘Noir’ is a uniquely special opportunity, and we are honored to bring this series to our global Prime Video customers,” said Vernon Sanders, head of television for Amazon MGM Studios. He added,

“The extremely talented Nicolas Cage is an ideal choice for our new superhero, and the accomplished producing team with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Amy Pascal, and the incredible team at Sony is dedicated to expanding this franchise most authentically.”

The series will introduce audiences to an older, more grizzled version of the iconic superhero. Set in the 1930s, Cage’s character is a down-on-his-luck private investigator in New York City, grappling with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero. This marks the first time the Spider-Man Noir character has been portrayed in a live-action project.

The series was announced at Amazon’s upfront presentation to advertisers on May 14. It will be directed by Emmy Award winner Harry Bradbeer, acclaimed for his work on “Fleabag” and “Killing Eve.” The executive producers, Oren Uziel of “22 Jump Street” fame and Steve Lightfoot from “Marvel’s The Punisher,” have collaborated with the team behind the Academy Award-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” to develop this series.

Katherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television Studios, expressed her excitement about Cage’s involvement in the project.

“We are thrilled to have Nicolas Cage starring in this series! No one else could bring such pathos, pain, and heart to this singular character,” she said. “Along with our brilliant producers and partners at Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video, we couldn’t ask for a better team to explore this reimagining of such an iconic character in Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters.”

Fans of the animated film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” will remember Cage’s voice work as the same character. His return to the role, this time in live-action, will excite fans and bring a new level of depth to the character.

For Cage, this television role is one of the main events in history: he had never before starred in a regular television series. The Academy Award-winning actor for Leaving Las Vegas and the Adaptation nominee has earned great praise for his varied acting, which he demonstrated in such films as Moonstruck, Raising Arizona, Face/Off, National Treasure, and Ghost Rider. His latest work is in Pig, Dream Scenario, and Renfield.

The series is part of the Marvel Noir universe – this is an alternative universe where the story unfolds during the Great Depression. In this universe, Peter Parker, bitten by a venomous spider in his youth, becomes Spider-Man when one of the spiders from the ancient broken artifact suddenly bites him. The spider appeared from a recently broken ancient artifact. Peter wears red goggles with special lenses, inherited from his late uncle Ben, who served in the US Army in World War I.

Unlike the mainstream Peter Parker, Spider-Man Noir initially employs brutal and lethal force against his enemies, unruly wrestling with the moral implications of his actions. He goes to war alone with the criminal underworld in New York City, motivated in part by the desire to avenge the deaths of his uncle Ben Parker and mentor Ben Urich.

The show also comes from a creative mind of Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot, who will also become the series co-showrunners and executive producers. They developed the series with Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal from “Into the Spider-Verse,” Phil Lord, and Christopher Miller and Amy Pascal will executive produce. Harry Bradbeer will executive produce and direct episodes one and two.

We can rest assured that given Nicolas Cage’s involvement, it would be a hardcore descent into the Marvel universe. Stay tuned for more information.
