Missing Child Rescued from Sex Offender’s Truck After Sheriff’s

Early on New Year’s Eve 2025, things went haywire on U.S. Highway 1 near Whiteview Drive in Flagler County, Florida. Deputies pulled over a white Ford F-150 after getting a tip from a concerned citizen about some shady behavior. What should have been a straightforward traffic stop turned into a wild chase, a brutal fight, and a couple of wrecks before it all wrapped up with arrests. The key players? A 60-year-old guy who’s a registered sex offender and a missing kid who was thankfully found safe in the truck.

It all kicked off around 7 a.m. when the deputies approached the truck in the Bunnell area, thanks to that “See Something, Say Something” alert. Inside, they spotted the driver, Darnell Hairston from Hastings, Florida, and two teenagers. One of the kids was immediately recognized as a missing juvenile from St. Johns County. The deputies got the teen out and into a patrol car no injuries, and the child was soon back with the proper authorities.

Hairston, who’s been on the sex offender registry since a 2004 conviction, took off running as soon as the cops tried to grab him. He sprinted across the road, tripped in the middle of traffic, and hit the pavement hard. A bunch of deputies piled on to subdue him, but he put up a serious fight. They’re saying he even tried to snag one of the officer’s guns during the tussle something that’s still being looked into, but parts of it show up in the video they released. You can hear the deputies yelling, “Stop resisting!” before they finally got the cuffs on him.

While everyone was focused on Hairston, 15-year-old Junior Bishop, also from Hastings, hopped into the driver’s seat and floored it. He almost nailed a deputy’s leg as he sped off south on U.S. 1, then hooked west onto State Road 100, weaving through cars and kicking off a full-blown pursuit toward Putnam County.

Bishop supposedly slammed into a patrol car that was trying to cut him off, pushing both vehicles off the road and into the trees. The truck flipped over several times. Meanwhile, another deputy chasing him lost control and crashed into a local auto shop back in Bunnell. Bishop managed to crawl out of the wreckage unscathed and got arrested right there. Two deputies ended up with some minor bumps and bruises they were checked out at Advent Health Palm Coast and sent home. Luckily, no one else got seriously banged up.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office dropped bodycam and dashcam footage on January 1, 2026, capturing the whole mess: the initial stop, Hairston’s bolt and takedown, the truck blasting off, and the frantic radio calls during the chase. They edited it down to a three-minute video that’s already blowing up online with thousands of views, and it lines up with what the officials are saying.

Sheriff Rick Staly didn’t mince words in his comments, labeling Hairston a “pervert” and ripping into the system for letting him out early.

“This suspicious situation is still being dug into by our detectives, but I’m relieved no one got badly hurt and we rescued that missing kid from this guy’s clutches,”

Staly said.

“What I can’t wrap my head around is why someone sentenced to 12 years back in 2004 got out after just five in 2009. Obviously, he hasn’t changed a bit!”

Hairston’s rap sheet includes that 2004 sexual battery on a minor conviction, plus stuff like aggravated assault and lewd conduct with a child. His early release was probably thanks to good behavior credits under Florida rules, which has Staly fuming. On a broader scale, Justice Department numbers put sex offender re-offense rates at 5% to 15% within five years not a huge jump in overall crime, but enough to worry people about dangers to children. Staly’s straight talk has stirred up discussions online about tightening parole laws, especially in Florida with its registry of over 50,000 sex offenders.

Right now, Hairston’s locked up without bond at the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, facing charges like resisting with violence and trying to grab a cop’s gun. Bishop’s looking at aggravated fleeing, battery on an officer, reckless driving, and a few other things; he’s being processed through the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice.

As of early January 2026, investigators are still piecing together Hairston’s connection to the kids no jumping to conclusions, just thorough police work. This whole ordeal underscores how a single tip from the public can make a real difference in saving someone. The sheriff’s office is praising the community’s alertness for the fast recovery, and it’s a solid reminder that staying vigilant helps keep everyone safer in Flagler County and places like it.
