Mexican authorities have arrested a senior figure in a violent cell of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) who allegedly ordered the 2025 livestreamed murder of a 23-year-old beauty influencer after she ended a relationship with his son.
Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, known as “El R-1” or “R1,” was captured on or around July 30, 2026, during a joint operation by special forces and federal security personnel in downtown Atotonilco el Alto, Jalisco. Officials identified him as the leader of “Los Rs,” a criminal cell linked to the CJNG that operates in parts of Jalisco and Michoacán, engaging in drug trafficking, extortion, and targeted killings.
Mexico’s Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, announced the arrest and its broader implications during a presidential press conference on July 31. He stated that Álvarez Ayala’s criminal network was involved in the May 13, 2025, killing of influencer Valeria Márquez (full name Atziri Valeria Márquez López) in Zapopan, Jalisco.
Márquez, a model and content creator with more than 100,000 followers across TikTok and Instagram, was shot dead while livestreaming from her beauty salon, Blossom the Beauty Lounge. Video from the stream showed her holding a pink stuffed animal moments before a man entered, confirmed her identity by asking “Are you Valeria?,” and opened fire, striking her in the chest and head. She collapsed on camera as another person ended the broadcast. The gunman fled on a motorcycle.
Prosecutors investigated the killing as a femicide. Earlier that day, men posing as delivery drivers had arrived seeking Márquez and claiming to have an expensive gift for her. On the livestream, she voiced concern, saying she feared they might have intended to harm or abduct her.
According to Harfuch, the case is linked to Álvarez Ayala’s son, Francisco Álvarez. The son had been in a romantic relationship with Márquez and allegedly threatened her repeatedly after it ended. “The son of R1 had a romantic relationship with Valeria. He had threatened her on several occasions and everything indicates — and this will be proven — that the son asked his father, R1, to carry out the femicide,” Harfuch said. Francisco and the alleged gunman remain at large.
Álvarez Ayala is also accused of ordering and financing the November 1, 2025, assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo. Manzo was shot multiple times during Day of the Dead celebrations in Plaza Morelos while among supporters. He had publicly criticized cartels and taken action against local organized crime. Authorities reported that 31 people had been arrested in connection with Manzo’s killing by the time of Álvarez Ayala’s capture. The late CJNG leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” is said to have had knowledge of the plot against the mayor.

Álvarez Ayala, who was previously detained in 2012 as a high-ranking CJNG operative and later released, is being held at the Altiplano maximum-security prison. He faces charges related to drug trafficking, illegal firearms possession, and other offenses. Officials indicated that his brother, Rafael Álvarez Ayala (“El R2”), is expected to take over leadership of the cell.
The arrest marks a significant development in two high-profile cases that underscored the reach of cartel violence in western Mexico — one targeting a social media figure in a public livestream, the other an elected official who challenged organized crime. Investigations into both killings continue.
