Miami Gardens police spent Friday doing traffic stops with a twist, pulling over drivers for legit violations and then surprising them with frozen turkeys instead of citations as part of their annual “Turkeys Instead of Tickets” giveaway.
Officers were out across the city on Nov. 14 stopping people for actual infractions—speeding, missing turn signals, seat belt issues, and other moving violations—when the usual frustration of seeing flashing lights turned into confused laughter and early holiday gratitude.
In a video shared on X, one officer walks a driver through the stop just like any other: “You know why I stopped you? You’re speeding 15 miles over the limit… you got to slow down.” Seconds later, the tone flips. “I’m not going to give you a ticket today… I’m going to give you a turkey for Thanksgiving.” The driver’s reaction is pure disbelief: “Oh my god… Did I just get the hell out of here?”
Police Chief Delma Noel-Pratt joined officers for the operation, saying the goal wasn’t to ignore unsafe driving but to build trust in the community while also reminding people to slow down. “The goal of today’s giveaway was to keep streets safe and also create positive interactions between officers and the community,” she said. “It’s very important to let them know that we’re engaged.”
The department handed out 60 turkeys during Friday’s event, continuing a holiday tradition they’ve run for years. Noel-Pratt said the timing matters—especially as families deal with higher costs and holiday pressure. “We are so happy to be able to bless them with a turkey,” she said. “It’s also important for the public to understand that we’re human and we do have a heart behind this badge.”
The program is powered in part by Walmart, which donates the turkeys and partners with police each year. Store managers say it’s about showing up for the city and strengthening ties with residents.
Miami Gardens PD says the annual initiative isn’t about letting drivers off easy—it’s about letting them know law enforcement can show up with compassion too. In this case, that compassion comes frozen and ready for the oven.
