Videos posted on X captured the moment: flames devouring the opulent “World of Orbyz” installation, black smoke pluming into the sky, and the distant bursts of fireworks shaking through the carnage.

The fire, which erupted around 6 PM local time during preparations for the finals, consumed some three-quarters of the stage, said The Sun. Local outlets, such as Belgian broadcaster VRT, and witnesses point to a pyrotechnics test having gone wrong as the likely catalyst, though organizers themselves haven’t come out with a statement to that regard. Pyrotechnics explosive units for breathtaking displays of lights are a feature ofTomorrowland’s festival, but due to their nature, they are a recorded fire hazard.
Thankfully, no festival-goers were on-site, as the event wasn’t due to start until July 18. Around 1,000 crew members were present, finalizing preparations for the 400,000 attendees expected across two weekends. “There were no casualties from the fire,” stated Tomorrowland on its website. Firefighters and emergency units arrived quickly, getting the fire under control within a span of one hour. Neighboring residents were warned to shut windows and doors due to smoke, but authorities confirmed that it was not a hazardous material.
“Our priority now is the safety of our visitors and those in the surrounding area,”
said Tomorrowland spokesperson Debby Wilmsen to local media.
The central stage is not only a sightseeing hotspot but the hub of operations of Tomorrowland, where top headliners like Martin Garrix, David Guix, and Swedish HouseMafia perform. This year’s “World of Orbyz” theme promised an icy, Narnia-inspired fantasy, with intricate LED panels and moving parts now reduced to charred ruins.

Rebuilding in under two days is “highly improbable,” according to event logistics experts on platforms like Reddit. Organizers have vowed to give updates, but thus far, up to July 17, there was no word from them regarding cancellation or changes. Both the Global Journey activities in Brussels and Antwerp, together with the DreamVille campsite, are yet to be called off.

In the fire’s aftermath, a fake email claiming Tomorrowland 2025 was canceled spread rapidly online, sparking panic among fans.
“With deep regret… Tomorrowland 2025 has been officially cancelled,”
the hoax read. Organizers quickly debunked it, with Euronews calling it “fake news.” Reliable sources like Consequence and VRT confirm the festival has not been canceled, though its format may change. Fans, many already en route from the UK, US, Australia, and Canada, expressed frustration and hope.

Tomorrowland is more than a festival; it is a world pilgrimage for EDM enthusiasts, pulling in 400,000 festivalgoers from more than 200 countries. For overseas fans, the festival is a bucket-list event, with many shelling out thousands of dollars for travel and admission. The fire jeopardizes not only their event but also the festival’s reputation for perfect production. The disaster parallels a 2017 blaze at Tomorrowland Unite in Barcelona that forced the evacuation of 22,000 after a pyrotechnics accident. It raises serious questions about safety procedures for pyrotechnics and temporary structures at giant festivals.
