Louisville Mayor to be Investigated for Poor Response to Protests

Louisville Mayor, Greg Fischer, is to be investigated for the poor response to the deaths of David McAtee and Breonna Taylor.

The Government Oversight and Audit Committee of the Louisville Metro Council filed an order on Monday, July 13th to officially launch the investigation.

The investigation will include police training policies, the no-knock warrant involved with Taylor’s death, and the city’s response to protestors. Additionally, the investigation will examine why the Kentucky National Guard and LMPD were called upon the night David McAtee was killed.

Mayor Fischer has publicly stated to welcome peaceful protests. The Louisville Metro Police Department however, has not responded in such a peaceful manner. During nonviolent demonstrations, tear gas and chemical pepper balls were used directly in individuals’ faces.

The death of David McAtee illustrates such unwarranted violence. McAtee, an African American man, had at least 18 bullets shot at him on the night of his death. Meanwhile, McAtee only fired a total of 2 bullets, in response to the aggression of officials.

Clearly there is a disconnect between the mayor’s promising words and the recurring actions of the Louisville Police Department. People are upset.

“It’s our intention, as a committee, to formally begin an investigation, to bring people in and get legitimate answers and legitimate documentation.” Quote from Councilman Brent Ackerson, chair of the committee.

The investigation of Greg Fischer’s administration will hopefully bring transparency and answers to the people of Louisville.

Greg Fischer was elected Louisville’s 50th mayor in 2010. Fischer swore in for a third term this past January.
