Lithuanian Farmer Unearths Church Bell Buried for 82 Years

An excavator lifted an enormous, dirt-covered object from a murky ground in Lithuania’s north. The heavy straps creaked due to the strain as the dirt was gradually stripped off to expose the clearly recognizable arch of a huge bronze church bell. Local villagers were mesmerized by the sight of the piece swinging peacefully under the bright sun after eight decades in darkness. The inscriptions carved into the artifact in 1908 became visible amid the dirt, and the video went viral online.

Local farmer Laurynas Družas made the discovery in August 2024 near the village of Antašava in the Kupiškis district. He had spent years searching with a metal detector, guided by stories his grandmother Genovaitė Družienė told him from her childhood.

“The bell belonged to the church of St. Hyacinth in Antašava,”

Parish priest Rimantas Gudelis told BNS news agency shortly after the find.

“It was cast in 1908… When the war broke out, local people unhooked it and hid it underground to prevent it from being cast and metal used to make weapons.”

The bell was crafted by Polish founder Antoni Włodkowski in Węgrów and originally hung in the belfry of St. Hyacinth (Św. Jacka) Church. Weighing hundreds of kilograms with ornate religious reliefs, including what appears to be a figure of the saint, it survived remarkably intact after 82 years underground.

Hidden beneath layers of time, the bell emerged through careful digging by heritage experts. Once uncovered, cleaning began immediately after that, artisans in Poland forged a fresh clapper. Back in place by 2025, it now hangs in the church tower with a smaller companion bell nearby. Pressing a button triggers its chime today, though Vidmantas DruĹľas, tied by blood to Laurynas, still keeps old ways alive.

Buried memories stir when something old resurfaces where sorrow once took root. In places like Poland and Estonia, lost bells have emerged, not with fanfare but presence echoes of people who held on despite everything. A single piece of weathered metal, yanked from soil long after silence fell, speaks louder than words ever could. Its voice returns now, thin yet clear, carrying weight from ruined times into an era obsessed with fleeting images.
