Lil Wayne Confirms He Won’t Attend Super Bowl in New Orleans

Lil Wayne, America’s most famous rapper, formally confirmed that he will not go to Super Bowl LIX in his city of origin, despite a strong tie with the city and a deal to headliner during halftime. In a post shared via his Instagram Story, it invited disappointment in followers and rekindled controversy over him not being included in celebrations. In a move that produced even more buzz, however, Wayne teased a future reveal, planned for February 6, and kept followers in anticipation over what is in store for them.

Super Bowl LIX, to be played February 9, 2025, at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, will feature Kendrick Lamar headlining at halftime, with SZA as a supporting act. Choosing Lamar over Lil Wayne generated mixed reaction, with one of the city’s most dominant performers, Lil Wayne, being one of them. Most of them desired him to make an appearance in the performance, with him having a long-term affiliation with New Orleans and having played a key role in defining rap in America.

Lil Wayne hasn’t been quiet about disappointment over not being included in a nod for the high-profile halftime performance. In a raw video uploaded in 2024, rap legend acknowledged that not getting a nod “hurt a lot” and took a little while to cool down first before speaking about it publicly. He added that getting an opportunity to perform in front of his city and in front of his mom would have been a career-defining success, and not getting it hurt even more.

During an “The Skip Bayless Show” appearance, Lil Wayne discussed feelings, saying, “It was a little disbelief, I guess. I felt I’d done my part, whatever I could, to deserve that opportunity, but for whatever reason, it wasn’t in my fate.” In a gesture towards not taking disappointment personally, even with disappointment at not being considered, he reiterated having nothing but respect for Kendrick Lamar and for being considered for such an honor.

Amid speculation about tension between two rap behemoths, Lil Wayne confirmed that he reached out to Kendrick Lamar himself in an effort to lay any misconceptions between them to rest. In an interview, in Kendrick’s view, the two sat down and discussed positively, and assured him that nobody had any grudges towards him. “I told him to go out and kill,” Wayne mentioned. “It’s his time, and I’m happy for him.”

Despite the snub at the Super Bowl, Lil Wayne has assured everyone that he is looking towards the future. In his video post, he hinted at a new project, describing it as “something very special” that will drop on February 6th. As much as he kept quiet about the details, rumormongers have gone into overdrive with speculations in both fan and industry communities.

Many believe that the reveal is possibly in relation to his long-promised album, Tha Carter 6, that he initially pledged to release in 2025. Others speculate that it could possibly be a new single, a surprise concert, or a significant move in the entertainment business.

Lil Wayne’s snub in halftime performance hasn’t gone unnoticed in the hip-hop community, with fellow performers including Nicki Minaj and Master P speaking out about it publicly, saying that Wayne deserved to be mentioned in his city of origin. Fans have flocked to social networks, with many saying that at least the NFL could have taken an opportunity to pay tribute to one of New Orleans’ most renowned personalities in terms of music. Fans have been trending with phrases such as #WeezyAtTheBowl and #WayneDeservedIt, a sign of solidarity with rap legend, Wayne.
