Kendrick Lamar headlined Top Dawg Entertainment’s 11th Annual Christmas Concert and Toy Drive at Nickerson Gardens Housing Projects. A long-anticipated yearly tradition, the event saw thousands gather to celebrate the season by giving back to the Watts community.
TDE’s Christmas Concert and Toy Drive has become a staple in the holiday goodwill, pairing world-class performances with a mission to uplift local families. Nickerson Gardens was transformed on December 12 into an entire festival replete with food trucks, raffles, sports activities, and a toy giveaway that lit up the faces of thousands of children. All attendees were invited to bring an unwrapped toy to donate so that some less fortunate families could share in the cheer of the holiday season. The events also included activities other than music, like free barbering, family holiday photos, and even a job fair the following day, showing just how involved TDE is in its community support.
It was when Kendrick Lamar took to the stage that the night really came alive. He got the Grammy-winning artist across with a high-energy set that included his iconic hit “Humble” and the premiere of a new track, “Squabble Up.” The greatest scene set him up when Lamar brought onstage some local children to dance around with the superstar. It’s touching and will be remembered-the very sensible way Kendrick showed he’ll never let go of his roots and how passionate he is about inspiring a new generation. His performance underlined his continued commitment to the community, even after the release of his independent album GNX, which had marked a new chapter in his illustrious career.
Other TDE heavyweights who joined Lamar on stage were SZA, Jay Rock, Schoolboy Q, and Ab-Soul, with special guests including GloRilla and Lefty Gunplay. It all kicked off with opening acts from locals that gave some community talent its moment in the sun.
But perhaps the most touching moment of the whole night came when Kendrick was joined by Ab-Soul for “Squabble Up,” a real reminder that both rappers had walked the same path and what their fruitful, artistic bond meant. The crowd went into hysteria as the spirit of companionship and holidays swelled through the air.
This year’s event has not been about the performances but is about lasting change. It focused both on providing immediate needs-a toy drive-along with further opportunities like a job fair. From the toy drive to the job fair, TDE’s Christmas Concert dealt with present needs while granting future opportunities. The Nickerson Gardens community, where both TDE founder Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith and Jay Rock grew up, remains fundamental in the label’s mission. Family photos and barber services continued into activities added toward giving warmth to the celebration-and an inclusive, impactful setting that was engaging for all age groups.
Kendrick Lamar’s appearance at the TDE Christmas Concert only reminded anyone of where he originally was coming from, and thus the very important part of himself he is. His ability to weave art into a tapestry of advocacy sends a feeling of wonder throughout, not just for Watts kids, but everyone that shares time with his work. The music, the lights dimming: not just a concert, but one of those moments standing as testaments to what music and community can do, both uplifting and binding them.
