Lil Reese Confirms His Conversion to Islam While Serving Time in Jail

Chicago rapper Lil Reese, whose real name is Tavares Lamont Taylor, has declared that he has converted to Islam while still serving a five-year prison sentence in Houston, Texas. The announcement was made during Ramadan 2025, one of the most sacred months in Islam, which began on February 28, 2025, and is still underway as of March 3, 2025.

Lil Reese was arrested in September 2024 on charges of aggravated assault. He allegedly punched and strangled his ex-girlfriend at The Pinkhouse nightclub in Houston, Texas. The incident reportedly left the woman gasping for air and fearing for her life. On October 16, 2024, he was sentenced to five years in prison and is currently incarcerated at the Garza West facility in Bee County, Texas. His altercations with the law have been a recurring theme in his life, and this recent sentence is another chapter in a well-documented history.

The rapper announced through his Instagram account, which has been his way of reaching his fans while in prison. In a recent post, he wrote,

“I DID SOMETHING I BEEN WANTING TO DO FOR SOME YEARS. I FINALLY TOOK MY SHAHADA DURING RAMADAN. THANK YOU ALLAH.”

The Shahada is the Islamic creed, the paramount step that formally recognizes one’s entry into the faith.

Prison conversions are nothing new, as many inmates seek religion for spiritual guidance or a sense of belonging during their time in prison. Lil Reese’s decision has caused mixed reactions on social media, with fans responding with everything from support to skepticism about his new faith.

Before his current sentence, Lil Reese served time from May 2022 through January 12, 2023, for an additional assault charge. He has been arrested on multiple occasions for assault and other crimes throughout the years, adding to his violent public persona.
