JPEGMAFIA’s Scathing Lyrics About Drake in New Album

JPEGMAFIA aka Peggy has been making waves in his latest album entitled “I Lay Down My Life For You,” released on August 1, 2024. In this new release, he takes aim at Drake with particularly scorching lines in two tracks, “It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot” and “New Black History,” as he names the Canadian rapper right out, stirring quite a bit within the music community.

    Lyrics Dissing Drake

    1. “It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot”:

Key Lyric: “Rappers they know what it is // If I show you a Drac’, I ain’t playin’ with kids.”

    2. “New Black History”:

Key Lyric: “Specially when ya’ll cashing out for PDFs and r*pers(No Drizzy)”.

JPEGMAFIA’s malice toward Drake isn’t a new development. For the last couple of years, Peggy has taken that sentiment to his music and continuously knocked on Drake’s style and persona. This album intends to do so again but in point-blank attacks.

Many are speculating that JPEGMAFIA is riding the waves created by the highly hyped feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. In insinuating himself within the discussion, Peggy could be trying to get more attention to his work and further establish himself among hip-hop’s current crop of critical figures.

The line from “It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot” appears to allude to some recent allegations against Drake, thus infusing controversy and immediacy into the diss. This is not a mere attack on Drake but definitely one that connects to the present times in order to be more relatable to the audience. One of JPEGMAFIA’s central criticisms of Drake inches around the perceived nature of prioritizing fame and commercial success over authenticity and lyrical prowess. Peggy’s distaste for what he perceives as Drake’s superficial approach to music is intended to fuel much of the vitriol evident in these tracks.

JPEGMAFIA’s history of dissing Drake provides a rich backdrop for this latest development. Previous tracks have included veiled and overt criticisms, establishing a narrative of rivalry and disdain. This continuity adds depth to the current disses, suggesting a well-founded and persistent grievance rather than a spur-of-the-moment attack.

Closer examination of the lyrics shows clever wordplay and pointed references. In “It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot,” the line “If I show you where a Drac’, I ain’t playin’ with kids” takes the idea of a double entendre (“Drac'” does refer to both Draco, the model of firearm, and Drake’s name) to really purport a threat. In “New Black History,” the reference to “PDFs and r*pers” does little but damn not only Drake, as part of a more foundational industry problem, while the parenthetical “No Drizzy” removes all mystery about who is being used as an example.

JPEGMAFIA’s new album, “I Lay Down My Life For You,” most definitely does not skimp in refinements to his perpetual beef with Drake. The sharp, ripping lyrics have never been sharper, leaving fans and critics alike scratching their heads over whether these are truly mind-contempt thoughts or a ploy to ride the waves of already-driven beef. Peggy added another chapter in what has become a surreal trip through hip-hop rivalries.
