Japanese Man’s Dream Ferrari Burns Down Just an Hour After 10-Year Wait

For 33-year-old Japanese music producer Honkon, a lifetime of savings for what would have been his dream car—a sparkling white Ferrari 458 Spider—ended in tragedy. Only an hour after picking up his coveted dream, worth 43 million yen (~$306,000 USD), it burst into flames on a expressway outside of Tokyo. The heart-wrenching image, documented by viral video, stunned car fans from all corners of the globe and struggled for Honkon to come to terms with an unthinkable loss.

It was on April 16, 2025, that Honkon finally got his big moment. After 10 years of toiling and sacrificing, he drove his new Ferrari 458 Spider onto the Shuto Expressway in the center of the congested Minato area. The top-down sports car, its 4.5-litre V8 engine thrumming at 562 horsepower, was not just a car – it was an emblem of success. But the triumph did not last.

While navigating the expressway, Honkon noticed white smoke billowing from the car. At first, he thought it might be another vehicle. Then, the horrifying truth hit: his Ferrari was the source. He quickly pulled over and leapt out. Within 20 minutes, flames engulfed the car, reducing it to a charred skeleton. Only a small piece of the front bumper survived the blaze.

Emergency services raced to the scene, extinguishing the fire with efficiency. Miraculously, Honkon escaped unharmed, and no injuries were reported. But the car—his decade-long dream—was gone.

“I was really scared that it would explode,”

Honkon later told The Sun. The emotional toll was immediate, and the financial loss staggering.

The Tokyo police are now investigating the origin of the fire. Initial findings indicate that it would have been from within the engine compartment, but no crash or outside source can be found. The authorities are determining if the fire was triggered by a mechanical malfunction or any other reasons. It is not known if Honkon’s car was insured or not, adding to his traumatic ordeal.

The Ferrari 458 Spider, built between 2011 and 2015, is not unfamiliar to the kind of fire-related issues. Ferrari recalled over 1,200 458 Italia models, its similar car, in 2010 to address a design flaw. Glue in the wheel-arch assemblies would get hot beside the exhaust and potentially ignite. Ferrari fixed the problem by upgrading to mechanical fasteners, but the recall created doubts regarding the safety of the model. Honkon’s vehicle, which was manufactured following the recall, would have been free of the defect, but the investigation will determine if similar issues existed.

It is not the first time that a Ferrari has faced such a destiny. A Ferrari 430 Scuderia caught fire in the UK only an hour after being delivered back in 2017, mirroring the tragedy of Honkon. These instances point out a sobering reality: even the world’s best cars have secret dangers.

Honkon used social media to express his sorrow, uploading photos and clips of the smoldering remains.

“My Ferrari went up in flames one hour after delivery,”

    Honkon wrote.

“I guess I am the first person in all of Japan to have this kind of trouble.”

Posts went viral online, garnering millions of views and igniting a flurry of posts. Everyone was relieved to know that he was alright, while a lot of other people were awed by the surreal tragedy. Others even poked fun at the ridiculousness of such a high-end car going out so abruptly.

High-performance cars, while thrilling, demand meticulous care. Their complex systems, pushed to extreme limits, can sometimes fail spectacularly. Honkon’s tragedy serves as a reminder that even the most coveted machines are not immune to disaster. For every story of a supercar blazing down the road, there’s a cautionary tale of one going up in flames.

While the investigation goes on, the world watches. Was it an accident, or does it indicate a deeper problem with the Ferrari 458 Spider? For now, Honkon is left to clean up the pieces, his dream machine turned to dust. Through him, and all across the world, his story is told: even the brightest dreams can end in flames.
