Jack Betts, Veteran ‘Spider-Man’ Actor, Dies at 96

With that brutal statement as Spider-Man board chairman Henry Balkan in Spider-Man (2002), Jack Betts left an indelible mark on popular culture. The line, delivered in direct dialogue in front of Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osborn, became legendary just moments before Betts’ character took a brutal killing at the hands of the Green Goblin. Jack Betts passed peacefully in his sleep in Los Osos, California, on June 19, 2025, at age 96, concluding the final page in a six-decade career spanning from Broadway stages to Italian Westers, to movies in Hollywood to popular TV sitcoms.

Jack born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on April 11, 1929, Jack Fillmore Betts moved to Miami at age 10. He took an early interest in acting after being frightened by Laurence Olivier’s portrayal in Wuthering Heights (1939). Betts later enrolled at the University of Miami to study drama, and soon after, he secured a privileged apprenticeship at The Actors Studio in New York the Who’s Who training ground for stars like Al Pacino and Robert De Niro where he trained under the renowned Lee Strasberg.

Reflecting on his early days, Betts once said,

“Olivier didn’t just act. He transformed. That’s when I knew I had to do this for the rest of my life.”

While Betts began on stage, making his Broadway debut in Richard III in 1953, he found a surprising niche overseas. Adopting the pseudonym “Hunt Powers,” Betts bluffed his way into the lead of Sugar Colt (1966), launching a prolific run in spaghetti Westerns stylish Italian-produced cowboy films popular in Europe and South America. Though these films never caught on widely in the U.S., Betts starred in more than a dozen throughout the late ’60s and early ’70s, earning international recognition.

“Those films taught me grit. We shot fast, on sand, and with almost no budget just passion,”

he once told a fan at a Western revival event.

Back in America, Betts became a household face. He made guest appearances in General Hospital, Seinfeld, Friends, Frasier, Power Rangers, My Name Is Earl, and even in one episode of Good Trouble in 2019. He had an extended run as Dr. Ivan Kipling in One Life to Live from 1979 to 1985. Friends still remember him as one dependable “character actor” an actor who could be summoned to populate any part and make it one to cherish.

Betts also had film credits in The Bloody Brood (1959), Batman Forever (1995), and Gods and Monsters (1998), alongside Ian McKellen.

But it was Spider-Man that brought him to a new generation.

“It was one line, but boy, did it echo,”

Betts joked in a 2015 interview.

“Everyone remembers the guy who fired Norman.”

Betts never married, but his longtime friendship with Everybody Loves Raymond actress Doris Roberts was legendary in Hollywood circles. The pair lived together in her Hollywood Hills home until her passing in 2016.

“Doris was family. We laughed every day,”

he once said.

He is survived by his sister, Joan Betts (now 99), and his nephew Dean Sullivan, who confirmed his death to People and The Hollywood Reporter. While the official cause was listed as natural, one outlet reported potential heart complications. Still, no foul play or illness has been reported.

Betts remained active well into his 90s, mentoring young actors at the Beverly Hills Playhouse and authoring a play, Screen Test: Take One. In 2018, Jack was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Boderscene Film Festival.
