A Houston man is facing serious felony charges after police say he kept his disabled wife locked inside a bedroom of their million-dollar home for five straight years barely feeding her, cutting off all contact with the outside world, and refusing her any medical help.
James Earl Johnson, 46, was arrested last Friday, March 6, right there in the upscale Clear Lakeneighborhood. He posted bond pretty quickly and is out for now, but he’s under a strict no-contact order and can’t go near the house on Crown Ridge Court.
The place is a big five-bedroom spread 6,783 square feet, bought back in 2015 that looks like any other nice suburban home from the street. Neighbors had no clue anything was wrong. Johnson, his wife, and their grown kids all lived there the whole time.

What finally broke the nightmare open was almost accidental. Johnson left his phone on her nightstand by mistake. She snatched it, dialed 911, and started talking. Court papers say he slapped her, grabbed the phone, hung up, and hauled her back to bed. But the call was enough Houston police rolled up around 7 a.m. that Friday, busted down the door, got her out, and arrested him on the spot. She’s in the hospital now, finally safe.
This wasn’t even her first try. Back in November she managed to get a call out too, but when officers showed up the family clammed up and police left without doing anything. That one haunts a lot of people reading the reports.
For five long years she had zero phone, zero real food most days just an egg here and there and no doctor visits at all. The rest of the house looked completely normal. Behind that locked bedroom door, though, it was pure hell.
Johnson is charged with injury to a disabled person and abandoning or endangering a disabled person both felonies. Bond was set at $50,000 (some court filings list it closer to $100,000 total). His next court date is March 18.

Johnson hasn’t said a word publicly and hasn’t lawyered up yet, at least not that anyone’s reported. The DA’s office is still building the case. His wife is still in the hospital under protection.
