Hip-Hop Legend Nas to Celebrate 50 Years of the Genre in London

Hip-Hop legend Nas to celebrate 50 years of the genre in London! Despite a tumultuous personal life, Nasir Bin Olu Dara Jones—better known as Nas—has become one of the most influential and respected rappers in hip hop. The son of a jazz musician, Jones dropped out of school in the eighth grade and used his street knowledge to become a rapping prodigy. He penned songs for the soundtrack to the 1992 movie Zebrahead and, soon after, Main Source’s classic 1991 track “Live at the Barbecue.” His subsequent appearances as a guest on tracks by Kool G Rap and Big Daddy Kane cemented his reputation as a prototype emcee who could write as well as spit.

A self-described “nuclear power” in the game, he went on to create a string of acclaimed solo albums. His 1994 effort Illmatic is widely considered as one of the greatest rap albums ever made.

The album is credited with advancing the storytelling aspect of hip-hop, as well as the use of complex lyrical schemes and witty phrasing. It paved the way for future rappers to delve deeper into their own lives and the world around them in the form of music.

On Illmatic, Nas addressed social and political issues that were affecting his home city of Queens. He also addressed the issues of racial tensions, drugs and crime, among other things that he saw in his community. His ability to do so was a huge reason for his popularity at the time.

In addition to his musical career, Nas has built a mini-empire of business interests. He has ownership stakes in urban media label Mass Appeal and a sneaker and apparel store.  also owns a restaurant in NYC called Sweet Chick and has a line of lip products. He has also launched a venture capital firm and invests in start-up companies.

As a philanthropist, Nas has supported several charities that relate to music and the arts. He is a supporter of UNICEF and has donated money to help victims of natural disasters. He is also a mentor for young up-and-coming rappers and has been involved in charitable projects for underprivileged youth.
