19-year-old Lucas Sander Jones faces second-degree murder charges after police say he beat a registered sex offender to death with a baseball bat, chopped up the body, and left it in suitcases for vultures to find.
Palm Bay, Florida, cops got a gruesome call on March 28: vultures circling abandoned suitcases in a remote wooded spot locals call “The Compound.” Inside? Human remains stuffed into two suitcases and containers. The victim was 28-year-old Colie Lee Daniel, a registered sex offender. The suspect? 19-year-old Lucas Sander Jones from nearby Indialantic. Police say Jones targeted him on purpose.
It started around March 20. Daniel showed up at Jones’ house on Watson Drive in Indialantic. That night, Daniel’s parents came looking for him. Jones told them Daniel was inside but wouldn’t let them in. Indialantic police showed up too, but no one found Daniel. He was reported missing days later.

By March 28, Palm Bay officers found the suitcases off Bombardier Boulevard. An Amazon package addressed to Jones was inside one. Blood evidence turned up at his home. An autopsy showed blunt-force trauma from a baseball bat and dismemberment. Jones was arrested, bonded out on lesser charges, then hit with second-degree murder plus abuse of a corpse and evidence tampering. He’s now locked up without bond in Brevard County Jail.
Cops say blood spatter, cleaning supplies, and a head-shaped dent in the tile were at Jones’ place. His girlfriend, Mishai Burrows, gave key statements to detectives. She first claimed she saw Daniel alive. Then she recanted on March 30, saying Jones coached her and she helped him dump the containers.
She told police Jones confessed:
“I killed somebody and cut him up.”
Evidence also included surveillance, witness accounts, and Daniel’s phone and AirTag found at Jones’ home. Jones had visible bruises when first questioned.
According to the police affidavit, Jones told his girlfriend he picked Daniel
“because he was a sex offender and he wanted to kill him.”
She said he printed a list of local registered sex offenders and had been studying it. Daniel’s 2018 conviction was for lewd or lascivious battery on a minor aged 12-15. Jones was only 12 at the time of that conviction. Police say Jones showed no remorse and even called the world “a better place now.” This motive claim comes straight from the affidavit and is not yet proven in court.
