Dallas PetSmart Shooting: Woman Killed After Dispute Over Saying ‘Thank You’

Tragically escalating out of a minimal social encounter, 41-year-old Cecilia Simpson was fataliy shot outside of a Dallas PetSmart on October 7, 2025, following a dispute with 22-year-old Keona Zachyua Hampton due to the fact that she was not shown a “thank you” for holding a door open for her. The shooting, captured on tape and by eyewitnesses, illustrates just how deadly tension from a daily encounter could turn out to be.

The brawl was sparked when a Five Below store in the Wheatland Towne Crossing shopping area off West Wheatland Road in South Oak Cliff, Dallas, was brought into conflict. As per the Dallas Police Department’s arrest warrant affidavit, Simpson had opened the door for Hampton when they were exiting from the store, but the courtesy was not noticed by Hampton. Simpson, who was accompanying her 20-year-old daughter, felt irritated and accosted Hampton in words for the perceived lack of courtesy.

After the initial argument, Simpson and her daughter drove to the nearby PetSmart. Hampton followed them inside, reigniting the verbal dispute. Employees asked both parties to leave after the confrontation continued. In the parking lot, Hampton allegedly threw a drink bottle at Simpson’s car. Simpson exited her vehicle and struck Hampton multiple times during a physical fight. Hampton then drew a black and silver handgun and fired three shots, hitting Simpson.

“I was just trying to get Simpson away from her,”

Hampton told detectives, as noted in the affidavit. Simpson was transported to Methodist Central Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police detained Hampton at about 7:45 p.m. that night after they saw their images through surveillance tape of them running in a black Ford Five Hundred. She confessed to the activities in questioning. Hampton faces charges of murder with Texas Penal Code §19.02 and is currently in Dallas County Jail with no bond. She is assumed to be innocent until she is proven guilty.

The case spread quickly on all fronts of social media, with people in awe of the consequential catalyst. As one caption observed,

“A shooting outside a PetSmart store in Dallas that was fatal was sparked by an argument stirred up because someone didn’t say thank you,”

another wrote,

“Affidavit: Fatal Dallas PetSmart shooting was sparked by argument over saying thank you.”

Opinions center around waning courtesy and danger of armed standouts in crowded areas.

These conflicts follow a national trend, with the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting in 2023 noting 21,570 murder and non-negligent manslaughter crimes, most of them being arguments’ aftermaths. In Texas, where it is permissible for citizens to carry weapons with or without a permit, experts observe increased chances of escalating. The case encourages pondering by how empathy and de-escalating in ordinary contacts could prevent losses as a remembrance of common humanness for Simpson.
